  • Roger,

And now he has back-slid on the military "trials" in Cuba... they have a LONG way to go.

  • Steve Withers,

This has happened before. After the disastrous presidency finally packs up and leaves office, we find out, bit by bit, it was worse than we thought it was. Much worse. This informs our view of future presidencies and makes us more sensitive to the telltale signs of incredible ignorance and / or incipient madness and / or outright criminality in high office.

"I wonder what's worse: a defense secretary who puts Old Testament quotes on progress updates on an invasion of a Muslim country or a defense secretary who thinks this will add to his president's knowledge and expertise."

Perhaps a President that was in fact influenced by those statements... is worse than whatever prompted them to be inserted?

  • Joshua Drummond,

Looks like the Pentagon lacks an experienced designer. I've seen better-looking Jehovah's Witness pamphlets.
Does this remind anyone else of the Presidential briefings in the Simpsons movie?
"Pick a number between one and five..."
    "Six"
    "There is no six."

  • Ian Dalziel,

    All Sing Now:
    " There is a balm in Gilead, To make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead, To heal the sin-sick soul."

unfortunately Donald Rumsfeld is the Barmy of Gilead
(Doing very nicely out of Tamiflu - thank you very much...
The man who put GILA in Gilead and ASP in aspartame)

I'm guessing Unca Donny's school Reports to Br'er Bush never included:
    "Thou shalt not kill"
    or
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"
    or
"Let him who is without sin cast the first stone"

    Is Obama Sin Laden too?

reversing his decision to release photographs of detainee abuse

and reinstituting Military tribunals at the still unclosed Guantanamo Bay Political Prison

Maybe the US of A can find a 12 step programme to help it out of its Power Addiction - Owning up to its past misdeeds would be a great start - otherwise it's just business as usual - Big Business that is.

I note the American mainstream media high-fiving over the release of the Woman Journalist, Roxana Saberi, in Iran with no mention of the Journalists that The US has imprisoned without charge and STILL has imprisoned...

US Continues to Imprison Reuters Photographer in Iraq
The United States is continuing to imprison at least one journalist without charge. Ibrahim Jassam, a freelance photographer for Reuters, has been held in Iraq since September despite objections from the Iraqi government, Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders and Reuters. Unlike Saberi’s case, Jassam’s imprisonment has received little news attention in the United States.

  • John Morrison,

I agree Obama is in danger of losing control of the story. Although I can certainly understand his reluctance, the time is fast approaching when he needs to front-foot this issue and stop the continual drip of documents and photos. Otherwise he risks derailing his whole agenda

But I am monitoring the US media very intently just now, to see how well this guy can turn his nation around. It is fascinating.

But what is more interesting is my reaction to the American public. After electing Bush twice, I didn't think too highly of them but after this latest election and watching the media recently, I have warmed to them.

You don't want to get me started on Dora the Explorer. Or Thomas the Tank Engine. Actually, the pillow/shield is a work of art.

Obama needs to let America get educated about themselves however it's not going to be painless.

The previous administration is covered in blood and torture,he's not releasing the photos because he knows the American image abroad will slip even further in the warzone. How much did Bush fuck that country up?

  • Tim McKenzie,

    Weren't those new testament quotes?

Indeed, but following the links to the slideshow, there are some quotes from the Hebrew scriptures, like Psalm 139:9--10. But wait, what would be wrong with quoting Psalms in a Muslim context?

The quotation of Ephesians 6 leaves out some important context:

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

    (New Living Translation)

The quotation of 1 Peter might also seem different if different amounts of context were included:

It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil.

    (New Living Translation)

  • Steve Ballantyne,

    @ Graeme Edgeler

    Weren't those new testament quotes?

Only two out of 11. One was from a letter by a guy who used to hang with Jesus, while the other was from from another letter by a notorious bullshitter and fast buck artiste who claimed to have seen Jesus in a vision years after he was dead.

Nothing from Christ himself; of course, US 'Christians' don't have much use for that Commie faggy peacenik stuff he used to spout.
