In some ways I think Javascript is inherently a bit ropey for creating AJAX websites. Maybe what's really needed is a built-in (as opposed to integrated through Flash/Sliverlight/whatever) IL interpreter that runs instructions compiled from whatever implementation tools were used to make the site.
Also, and this is much easier, it would be good if when browsers were to save biggish blocks of text as you type, so that in the event of a stuff-up, you could recall your typing.

I can't help but notice that Safari's...
What? You can't leave us hanging like that.

This works very smoothly on a 2.4GHz iMac, but I wonder if it'll be so sweet on a Windows PC, or an older Mac, especially one with not much memory installed -- the beta is presently hogging a lot of the 2GB I'm packing. We'll see how it goes when I have 100 tabs open.

Am I the only person that dislikes the Powershop banners? Especially the one with the plugs that seems to capture my cursor with a tractor beam.

Do you routinely keep 100 tabs open? Let's explore this.

Sometimes I'll open a few more just to get it up to three figures. Impresses the kids.
The upshot of that kind of use is that I usually had to force-quit Safari 3.
The portents for Snow Leopard are good: much smaller application footprints, smaller demands on memory, etc. I think this will be worth the wait.

Next you'll be telling us that they like your funky middle-aged white man dance moves.
I'm going to translate "impresses" as: "yeah Dad, great, well done, you're the bomb. Can we have the computer back now? You're wasting the internet."

Don't know anything about Macs really except that I find itunes annoying but perhaps no worse than any other bossy you-must-do-it-this-way media hub. I use Google Chrome browser for windows which is fantastic. All the useless stuff has been stripped away, and a lovely clean interface. The add-ons in Firefox are good but it takes a long time to load. Chrome rulz.

What is it that people are doing with their javascripts that need so much speed? Whatever became of the idea of thin clients?

Or best of all, when I start busting some rhymes! But, as I always explain to them, sometimes it's a dad's job to be annoying.

Leo says: "He's not wasting the internet, he's sitting on it. It's your throne, dad. Because nothing says the internet is your b**** like having a hundred tabs open."
I honestly don't know where he gets these ideas. The internet, probably.

That and all those disreputable people you keep letting in your house.
Seriously, squeaked with laughter at that.

You're the Yo-Yo-Ma of web browsing.

Loading ads, mostly.

I think I'm going to enjoy the coverflow style history at home also...
If only for that endearing wee habit the old man has every time he happens to pop round and just happens to borrow my intertubes for the TAB.
Before he stands up, he closes every single window in every app that's showing, leaving only the desktop. Delightful it is.
Yep, Safari 4 over here on Windows XP in the office seems bloody snappy on a wee 1.8GHz laptop with only 1GB RAM.
Even with a couple of coverflow type tabs and the Java powered logmein remote access amongst all the others, it's still much faster than IE7 on this same machine. Yep, coverflow is sweet on Windows too.
Hmm, I'm kinda enjoying the new tabs, dragging one off into it's own window does the same cute expanding page thing it does over in MacOS.
I must still be the internet's plaything...I usually top out at a dozen or so tabs...

tried to quiz a supposed Apple tech head about Snow Leopard at the 5th Ave Apple store two weeks back. He claimed complete ignorance of it, never heard of it, which both surprised and bemused me. I guess it was as yet outside his assigned compartment.

Ah, that's right, I remember when I used to get those. Fair enough, for those who want the ads to load faster, a fat-arse client is a good thing. And a really fat pipe to the net too.

How odd. Commenting on unannounced products will get you killed at Apple, but Snow Leopard is very much announced.

His response was 'we are the last to know'. I thought, yes the very last it seems.
But what I loved was the way you handed your purchase to a blue shirted guy wandering the floor. He ran your card through his handheld and then emailed you the receipt, taking a bag from one of the many podiums around the store. Purchase took a good 2 minutes maximum.

It's interesting that Apple have ceased naming their OSs after German tanks and moved to a Russian one:

What is it that people are doing with their javascripts that need so much speed?
AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) - applications like GMail and Google Docs that run various forms of editor and the like in the local browser.
This wasn't really anticipated when Javascript was invented.
-
He then pooped on his own aphorism by declaring that Javascript was invented by Sun Microsystems (it came out of Netscape early in the browser wars)
Crikey, confusing Javascript with Java is a really noob mistake.
but I wonder if it'll be so sweet on a Windows PC
If you want webkit in Windows you use Google Chrome, which is already known to be super sweet, and which seems to be the same place Apple stole the 'default to a bunch of thumbnails of your popular sites when you open a new tab' thing.
(So it'll probably turn out Chrome stole it from Opera. But who uses that besides a few complete weirdos?)
Chrome is really good, I'm torn between using Firefox with all of my beloved extensions, and Chrome which is just so blisteringly fast - and so completely out of the way, with its delightfully minimal UI.
-
I installed Safari 4 this afternoon -- it IS very fast, and the "12 sites in one frame" feature makes me think that it might be time to get a 30 inch monitor.
But then my mail crashed twice in 5 minutes, and then I noticed the macintouch.com page from which I learned about the beta also had a comment saying "Safari 4 made Mail crash" -- so it was back to Safari 3 for me. (And a reboot both times)
But on the happy front, I did figure out why my little Mac Mini server was hammering its external disk for half an hour at a time (a problem caused by an odd set of circumstances which not even Google seemed to have heard of.)
-
Oh the tabs on top thing came from Chrome as well - and I find it really super good. They're the best tabs in any browser I've used - it's great being able to just drag a tab off into it's own window so easily, say if you've started a video and want to keep watching that on another monitor while reading some other thing, then you can drag it back into the first browser window just as easily.

Heh. I did see a blog comment earlier complaining that IT'S ALL STOLEN FROM OPERA AND IT'S JUST NOT FAIR.

No Chrome on the Mac for a while yet, unfortunately. It'll be interesting to see how the two measure up -- although the first few benchmarking efforts seems to suggest that Safari 4 is faster than anything, ever.

This blogging thing seems to be working for Leo. He just came out after installing a five-CD shooter he bought on Trade Me (we had to copy the contents of disc 5 onto a flash drive; couldn't even make an iso, but it worked) and declared:
"This is the digital embodiment of the sin of gluttony."
I think this counts as home schooling ...
