  • Yamis,

I see the Herald took their line from this...

"Exactly what did you do to her, Tony," one reporter called out after the departing star.

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/category/story.cfm?c_id=707&objectid=10520858

But since when did Tony Veitch become a "star" anyway? He's always been a pisspoor sports 'journalist' and I have never understood how he got to where he is, AND I AM a sports nut. Mind you looking at the sports journalists we have in this country I'd say it's a good indication of the size of our population and gene pool.

  • stephen clover,

About 2 years ago Veitch, in discussing Venus and Serena Williams with someone on air one morning, commented something like "it makes you realise where apes come from".

I don't understand this. What's he saying? What's he asking? What's the answer? Apes come from... Los Angeles? Tennis clubs? It's so confused and ignorant.. is it offensive?

Clint Brown was sacked for an offence that, while despicable, was nowhere near as abhorrent as this.

He did wha' now? Got drunk and got punched? "Despicable"? Easy, tiger...

It could be worse, we could have Stephen Jones and the Lewis Hamilton Blowjob Brigade.

Sure, Stephen, but if you're invested in the whole 'role model' argument, then perhaps you shouldn't be getting in a position where you're facing allegations of being so pissed and verbally abuse you get a slap in the first place. Not as vile as Veitch's "lashing out" I grant you, but not exactly the way I'd want a high profile employee behaving while on assignment. Having said that, could someone point out that the media is not exactly a profession famed for attracting teetotal celibates whose idea of a good night out is a monastic early night with a mug of cocoa and an improving book?

Fair enough, and looking at my original response I don't want to sound like I'm condoning common assault either. Having been on both sides of that equation, there are ways to deal with obnoxious piss-heads that don't go there - however tempting it may be.

That was very intense reading last night, but thanks Russell for deciding to leave the discussion up.

Was trying to find this yesterday, because the argument about the finer points of the meaning of lynching reminded me of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_hitlerum

  • Russell Brown,

Okay, this just in from a reliable source ...

Paul Holmes is doing THE interview with Veitch for this coming Herald On Sunday. This is the man who, according to Drinnan, helped draft Veitch's apology to the nation.

It was a 3 hour interview with Veitch. In which Veitch made certain 'admissions'. It is being transcribed by a secretary so Paul can write it up. The original tape will then be destroyed - and Shayne Currie doesn't get to see the transcript or have the tape.

It is a nice ethical issue, huh.

The redemptions just come sooner and sooner these days ...

Tea Ropati got his last week, if that's any guide - not that drunken adultery and an acquitted rape charge is the same thing, but it's still rapid rehabilitation.

And Bridget Saunders started it in that column linked to by Craig above with her vapid maunderings equating Dunne-Powell's injuries with Veitch's loss of reputation, saying how sorry she felt for the poor man.

What. The. Fuck. Any lingering doubts about cancelling the Herald sub (and not renewing the launch offer of three months free HoS to existing subscribers) have gone. Sorry, but once more I've got to wonder can you say the words 'editorial standards' or 'editorial judgement' to anyone at the Herald and not get a blank stare?

  • Jeremy Eade,

"The Herald understands staff at Radio Sport's sister station, NewstalkZB, were instructed not to broadcast talkback calls on Tuesday about the allegations against Veitch.

The Radio Network's general manager of talk programming, Bill Francis - who stood alongside Veitch as he made his statement on Wednesday - said the network needed to gather more information about the claims that had been made."

Talkback radio wants to gather more information before they comment. That's beautiful.

The whole veitch thing makes me wonder how violently inclined is the NZ male , I mean we greet half the bloody world with a war dance and wank on endlessly about our warrior spirit, maybe it's time to start an all black game with some flowers and handshakes.

  • Craig Ranapia,

BTW, any Herald/APN employee out there who would like to share (on the downlow) what the conflict of interest standards are at APN nowadays? If Holmes did "[help] draft Veitch's apology to the nation", it seems an ethical no-brainer that he's the last person who should have his by-line on "THE interview" with Veitch.

Drinnan would certainly go up in my estimation if his next media column dropped the goss, and included a expose of the ethical compass of his own employers.

Sorry, not to get all historical on your ass again, but... emphatically yes. Racist iconography has often associated African-Americans with apes or monkeys as a dehumanising slur.

As for this rehab interview with Paul Holmes... I have a disturbed feeling. Is Veitch actually about to keep his job or something?

Until I started reading this thread, I thought that Tony Veitch was the slapper weather-lady from TV3

Hey! Leave 'Mummy can't talk now Toni's on the screen' Toni alone.

I was thinking about this last night, and this occured to me. You don't have to look far for TVNZ continuing to run a show featuring a guy mostly famous for beating the living shit out of his partner.

Being a good right-wing, free-marketeer perhaps time to drop TVNZ a line suggesting that any news bulletin or schedule including Mr Veitch will result in your eyeballs being pointed elsewhere? Another sharp ratings dip (with the knock-on effect in advertising revenue) might just convince TPTB that a Rickards-style 'fuck off' cheque would be an effective long-term investment.

Danielle, I note in the Herald this morning that TVNZ intend to keep Veitch off air until after the Olympics, before allowing him to return to work. Hmmm. Individuals on PAS with far more intimate knowledge of employment law than I have stated that if TVNZ knew about the assault previously, it would negate any 'disrepute' clause in Veitch's contract. I say again: hmmm....

I like watching Jim Hickey on TV1 better, particularly during those little spots at about 7.40pm during Coro St. He's so *weird*. He has all these strange blazer-adjusting tics, and he always exhorts you to do something irrelevant at the end of every bulletin. You know he thinks he's being avuncular, but it ends up coming off kinda creepy. 'Put the jug on!' Really, Jim? Do I have to?

I refer you to the habit of some supporters of making ape noises and throwing bananas at black players until at least the the 90s in England and the 21st century in some parts of Europe.
