You used both of these handles on this forum, though, right? I'm not sure that making such connections is a breach of etiquette. Others may correct me on this.
Indeed, they've been used here, so they're relevant to here. End of story.
And I don't actually think that people working out that two pseuds are the same person, solely on similarity of comments, is "outing", because it doesn't involve the use of any outside knowledge. It's stating something which is at least in the process of becoming self-evident. How obvious does it have to get before anyone's allowed to mention it?

Kia ora Sacha: indeed, I went over the top, and I apologise to PAS for that -*but*
-there has been a consistency in Mr Whomever-he/it-is of having a go
at some comers, not least myself. Using his/it's 'alter-ego' both posts and responses have been pro-Barry Brailsford and anti-Kai Tahu - to take one example. Yep, that yanks my chain. And may I also thank Russell & Emma? - max to the mods-

I only really became certain of the connection when he started slipping off down the dark side again.

Robbie, if you want to really change identity, you also have to change your style when you're angry/offended as much as when you're getting along. That you keep coming back, and are open about a number of personal things in your life suggests you see something of value in the place. Don't wreck it with moments of self indulgent nastiness, mate. Try just writing it and deleting it, I find that helps sometimes. We all think these things, but there's something hypnotic about that "Post Reply" button. Try the other one first - "Preview". Breathe, Relax. Put on some phat beats, chill out, play with your dogs for a bit, and reconsider.
My psychic powers suggest you're most especially bitter this time because it is your real name, finally. If so, Robbie, you can do better, I know it. I certainly thought I saw a lot more refinement in this particular identity, right up until 2 pages ago.

My psychic powers suggest
Suggest? Suggest? I wont be using you then. I thought the whole point was that being psychic an' all, you should know man! ;))
-
I'm especially bitter because all our stripper poles and dancing fish has gone entirely unnoticed. Huh! You'd think something more important was going on or something...
Good luck, and good night!

unnoticed. Huh!
Aye, best place to be sometimes. Good night :)

I had actually thought that she was a he,
Likewise, that realisation turned my entire universe a deeper shade of green.
I recall previously thinking, "why is this guy always having a go at me?" I mean nothing sexist by this, but Islander's verve made a lot more sense to me after overcoming the gender misplacement. Now you feel like family Islander.
I remember joining here as an impetuous wanker, and I'll be the first to acknowledge I still have my moments, but this place provides a most compelling, stimulating and agreeable sanctuary from the haphazardness of the offline.
We all think these things, but there's something hypnotic about that "Post Reply" button.
Nicely worded post there. Making the leap from pseudonym to true identity will always present issues of coalescence.

Thanks chris!

E hi noa ana, na te aroha.

Kia aku mihi ki a koe, me te aroha- how sweet it is, to be able offer good wishes, in both our languages- n/n keri (who just doesnt often post under that name.)

The psychic side is fledgling. My bread and butter is transport to alternate reality.

If Islander doesnt want the association made to her real name by others unless she does it herself then afford me that same privilege. I dont want the association made public to other pseudonyms unless i do it myself.
Is that really so much to ask for?
As for the women ragging of previous pages. It wouldnt have made a difference if they were men. I still would have ragged on them for not having the balls to put their names to the Kurariki story despite claiming to have been groped and exposed to with no charges being laid.
But then Bailey probably wouldn't have allegedly exposed himself to men...dunno eh ?
-
Is that really so much to ask for?
Yes, and for the reasons already explained.
-
Nah thats bullshit Gio. 2 keystrokes to edit 2 words ? whats so hard about that ?
The wider issue is outing in the case of public interest. There is no public interest in who else i post as, i dont wish for it to be made public what other pseudonyms i use and i'm sure neither would anyone else using a nom de plume on line.
play the ball not the man or the man behind the masks.

If you change from a pseudonym to your real name or to another pseudonym, then the community has a right to connect those particular dots, sorry. You have to own up to your online identities, and if that means also owning up to a history of trolling, well, too bad. What do you think we do every time a new lil'p comes on the scene?

When you show a history of being abusive, Robbie, it is understandable that the public here will take an interest. Any community would, to protect itself.
Your own habits gave you away, though I'm now persuaded by the insightful Ben that maybe this is your real name. Honour it with good words and honest behaviour from now on and I'm sure people will have no reason to bring up the names you've used in the past.
-
Wise words.
-
C'mon, it was kind of incredibly obvious who you were in previous incarnations, Robbie. You're not exactly Subtle McCoy.
(Also, how I love that OutKast song. So much. 'I catch a beat running like Randy Moss!')
-
I'd agree with that Danielle - I've found that when I "live" at a particular forum for a while I start to build up a picture of the main characters on that forum - both through the things they reveal about themselves bit by bit over many months of posting, and also by the style in which they write.
I've been in other forums where particular members changed pseudonyms over time, but pretty much the whole community recognised them almost immediately - even with new names - because their style of writing was still recognisable. It's like your voice or your handwriting - you may change your name but you can't change your writing style so easily.
It's been completely obvious to me that Robbie is the same person as XXX and XXX - the writing styles (and bits of supporting info) are too similar for it not to be the same person - but it's not something I tried to figure out - I just naturally recognised it. That's why your collection of pseudonyms that you have used in this forum can't really be protected or not mentioned or hidden away Robbie - because I think many of us have connected them without even trying.
Linking Islander's real name/pseudonym is completely different because (almost always) she posts as "Islander" on this forum. I wouldn't dream of outing her because that's her choice, and it's important to respect that.
I'm sure some of you know my RL name - I know Russell and Sacha do, for example - and it doesn't worry me if you do - I decided to use webweaver as my name here because that's who I am in lots of other places, and I like having that consistency of persona across the interwebs - but if I had made an effort to separate my RL from my online persona (which I haven't) I would be mighty pissed off if someone outed me. Pointing out that I am webweaver in some places and webweaverToo in others (generally when webweaver is already taken), not so much.

Yes but. If Robbie doesn't want to admit to it, I think it's bad form to pin it on him. I also think that there are a bunch of people here who have at least once managed to misidentify someone as a sock puppet who should be rather wary about claiming x is y.
Discussions of pseudonyms descend into accusations of bad faith really really quickly, and generally at that point the conversation's screwed. (& I think `fake handles' is the sort of inflammatory talk that hastens that on its way.)
(I think changing pseuds is bad practice if you don't link the old and new in general, but I don't think it is anyone else's prerogative to link them involuntarily.)

Keir, if you go back to page 5 of this thread, I don't think that's a very accurate account of what actually happened. Robbie wasn't suddenly outed by Islander, out of the blue. He said:
if we're going to discuss stuff in the open, then let's be right out in the open. I'm about done hiding behind pseudonyms and giving a shit who i offend anymore, but dont quote me on that :)
Then Sofie asked who the previous pseuds were, Ben said he reckoned he could work it out, and Robbie said Ben was probably right, and that if anyone wanted to know they could ask Russell. Far from saying, "but I'd prefer it if no-one mentioned those names" he actually brought the subject up in the first place.

In another forum I frequent, there is the phenomenon of the "brand new day", where someone who has been banned or who has left voluntarily starts afresh with new handle, a clean slate, and the opportunity to forge a new identity.
This can be a good thing, but it depends on people resisting the urge to go Hey! X used to be Y! Let's pelt them with rotten fruit for their old sins!
-
But that's not to say he wants to admit to it. He says he's done with it, he's put it behind him. He's repudiating the others. (And then he basically says `take it off-blog', which is pretty much a request not to talk about it here.)
It is in my opinion bad form to respond to that with snark about the other names.
-
You're arguing as if the "other names" are not the same person exhibiting the same behaviour. Once that changes, no one will care - plenty of substantive stuff to discuss.
-
Well the problem is that to establish that you have to allow for staggering bad faith/immorality on the other fellow's part, and that always ends badly. (This is basically an argument against ad homs and meta arguments.)
Of course you can disagree. This is merely my opinion.
However, I have never yet managed to lay false accusations of sock-puppetry and trollery, so I think that I may be doing a bit better than some.
