  • Rich of Observationz,

I think if I remember Maggie for one thing, it's the way she conspired with arms dealers and the Saudi regime to garner enormous bribes which were fed back into the pockets of her and her associates. It took her from being a relatively poor "grocers daughter" to the lifestyle of a multi-millionaire. (With only a bit of collateral damage in the form of the jailing of Jonathan Aitken, one of the bagmen, as a result of bodging some of the coverup).

I suspect we might hear more now that her ability to sue for libel has been removed.

A corrupt, evil bitch with no redeeming features. I'd happily have paid twenty quid for a newspaper that's had the type chiseled out by hand and printed with a steam engine to avoid what she turned England into.

  • Matthew Poole, in reply to tonyH,

will we dance on [Roger Douglas’] grave?

If I were Roger I’d be planning to be cremated, with my ashes scattered on Sir Rob Jones’ farm. That would deny the bastards the chance to dance on my grave.

ETA: I know that Roger also has a knighthood, but I cannot bring myself to show the slightest respect to a man who railed against government waste and then displayed not the least bit of discomfort at accepting NZ Super, a Parliamentary pension, and an MP’s salary all at the same time.

Thatcher's mate Pinochet had to be disposed of the same way to prevent post-mortem revenge by his victims.

  • Roger Lacey,

    From the Telegraph website:

The BBC also made an embarrassing gaffe on its news mobile website on Monday afternoon, announcing that Baroness Thatcher had died “following a strike” rather than a stroke.

    Heh!

Are you sure it was all three at once?

    Ahem.

(I mean, I agree with your larger point: fuck her and all the mealy-mouthed tributes to her "legacy". But... yeah.)

    Ahem.

Yeah, I actually meant to include a "avoid gendered insults please" rider. So, that.

"I happened to be watching Parliament on TV that day"

Snap. Not sure which was the most dramatic live, that or the Berlin Wall coming down. Neither did I expect to see in my lifetime.

Matt McCarten was certainly under that impression at the time, and I found a couple of other references that indicated that Douglas was triple-dipping into the public purse during the last term.

Odd how the Gipper and the Iron Lady both had dementia at the end. Early onset would explain their politics.

Sorry Russell; surely trout is ungendered?

I disagree. Something needed to be done, to be sure, but this is just recycling the myth that There Is (was) No Alternative.

As the pragmatism included the brain fart of floating the New Zealand dollar, yeah, if only there HAD been an alternative.

It's always puzzled me why only a woman can be called a trout, and only a man can be called a coot.

I think I prefer discussion that has no name-calling, though.

  • Rich of Observationz,

Alright, she was an evil anal passage with no redeeming properties.

I think one of the things that enabled her to be so successful was that many on the left were more concerned with correct use of language than the physical actions of government. This reached its nadir with Blair, who would never use an incorrect word but was quite happy to riddle people with depleted uranium if they happened to live in the wrong country.
