Sue,
i have uncovered my crate of CDs and stereo bus has been my to go to CD this week. don't you wish bands like them could last forever and ever and others not.

Thanks Russell. Just buzzing over Lorde. Wow!!!

See you tonight at the library. It's where all the cool kids hang out.

Abbaesque? Goddammit I'll never be able to enjoy "Sprawl II" again.
On a happier note, "Birthday" is one of the finest songs ever written in this country and one of the best kiss off songs you'll hear anywhere. I don't understand why those two Stereobus albums are so unheralded. They bristle with intelligence, fabulous melodies and tumescent guitars. Happy birthday indeed Mr Yetton.

Strictly speaking, late-period Abba. (Apparently they even referred to it as “the Abba song” when they were recording it.)
Also: you got a problem with Abba, buddy?
-
There shall be no dissing of ABBA on my watch, young man. I am quite stern on this issue.

I do admire them in the way that one tends to admire ruthlessly efficient killing machines. Personally, gimme The Shirelles any day.

Hebe,
Lorde: how amazing! Go well. My family is cheering her on: she's inspiring my 15-year-olds to keep working on their projects.

I don't think it's either or, but I never got the clinical Swedish craftsmen either. I like the technique but it's very icey.

Over on Twitter, Judith Collins tries really hard to celebrate Lorde's number one:
@JudithCollinsMP Lorde hits No1 on US Billboard chart RT...Great news and she keeps her clothes on too.
It's probably intended as a diss against Miley Cyrus, but let's not forget that Kimbra wasn't wearing any clothes in the video for the global hit "Somebody That I Used to Know". Oh, Judith.

As a parent of a high-performing 15 year old daughter, I am feeling very much the same.
-
Update: J-Col is not a Miley fan:
@robyngallagher @JudithCollinsMP You're referring to Gotye and Kimbra being naked but for body paint in the "Somebody that I used to know" video, right?
@JudithCollinsMP @robyngallagher aNo. Wasn't impressed with Miley actually
Judith is probably more a fan of Miley's Hannah Montana years.

Great essay by Lorde/Ella in last week's SST Sunday magazine. Gonna be no stopping her.
Look back at the pop scene in the 60s and there were loads of kids her age making waves with great material, the big change is (hopefully) that Lorde et al don't get ripped off by the industry in the same way. -
More Lorde! It seems Vevo are doing a series of short interview/profile things with her this week. Here's the first, where she talks about her influences - both musical and literary. She read Raymond Carver when she was 10!

I've got some terrible wedding gig associations with Abba, but I do like this one:
Might be the best track Midge Ure never wrote.

Speaking of Lorde, great review of her New York concert from the New York Times yesterday http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/02/arts/music/shes-16-but-not-thinking-of-sweet.html?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=edit_th_20131002
Oh, I am ever so pleased that you have finally found Arcade Fire. They were the primary reason I went to BDO last time, and why I am going again in Jan 2014. But hold back on the Abba references--I hear littlle that is Swedidsh in their music. You need to go back to their first release Funeral, to get a sense of how ground-breaking they are. -

I thought people might like to see where Lorde’s music was recorded, so I hopped on my bike earlier. It’s quite an interesting building ….
Ten years ago a friend of mine lived in the upper floor, in a cool-dude bFM flat. It is indeed a really interesting building. I don't know what the bottom floor is like (where Golden Age studios is) but the top floor was all these offices (or bedrooms!) with gorgeous wood panelling. It didn't feel like it had much done to it over the years so much of the original 1930s (ish) character was still there. It seems like a perfect place to record an album.

I popped in to see Campbell Smith recently -- and that's still how it is.

See how you like this cover of 'The Suburbs'. It's pretty sweet.

Just that one song. And they said it ...
But I'm pretty struck by where they're going now. As James Dann put it to me, it's as if Talking Heads were on DFA Records. Taut, danceable, smart, big-band stuff.

God how we (my cohort) all hated them when they came out. I even taped over and ABBA CD with some "real" music in order to terrify my friends when it was my turn to choose the cassette on the road trip.
Then came Muriel's Wedding. It's kind of wierd that one movie can change all the connections for that music. It's still cheesy, but now it's cheesy in a lovable way.

Madge knew what she was about when she nicked a bit of this.
