Ironsides House - Wooden two story house will put in piles 9 meters down for another $100k or an additional 10% of the repair bill.
Timber Framed buildings have a life beyond 22 Feb, if we want.
I've been looking at Google Maps Street View with misty eyes of recent.

I’ve been looking at Google Maps Street View with misty eyes of recent.
Good to know it hasn't been updated yet, I was hoping that the old view would be retained for future generations, and I heard somewhere that there is an app that allows people with smart phones to see what stood on any particular site - similar to the astronomy app on an iPad (or the virtual tourism/art idea in Gibson's Spook Country , without the cumbersome headgear or goggles )

Google are on board and realise what this means to Christchurch and History.

The 360° City layer is good too, it has some internal views of the Cathedral and some more 360° views of the Square as well..

Russell, are there any plans to show this overseas? I'm now back in London and would like to show my support (as an ex-pat kiwi) by seeing it over here if possible... alternatively, is it available online, or via DVD perhaps?

Hebe,
The best news today: Christchurch beaches are open in time for summer. A big shout-out to the council workers who got the sewage overflows fixed; the thought of summer without beaches had made me and my boys wonder if we really could be happy here again.
And thanks to all for the moral support for my partner's ACC woes.

The Deconsecration ceremony was a giggle. I have two independant reports that Bishop Matthews Deconsecrated herself as Bishop, rather than the Cathedral Building.
The ceremony was even protested by someone Cera let in.
Interesting that Roger corrected himself to say that everyone the Cathedral wanted to have present were allowed in.
This obviously means the Cathedral is not for the Citizens of Christchurch, only its parish.

No dvd or other release in the immediate future. I'd guess things might change after the 'anniversary' in Feb 2012.

As much as I'ld love too go for a swim. That photo tells me there are a lot more nutrients in the estuary than there used to be - all of that Green Weed is not a good sign.

Ecan haven't updated their site and Sumner is the one to watch.

I hoped I would never have to say something like this.
The land on which the Cathedral was built was chose for a reason, a reason we may not remember but at some time in our Nations past it must have seemed significant.
It has certainly evoked passion in the most passionless people
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting anything by that link, it was just the firs result from a Google search for "passionless people", thought I'd save you the trouble of doing that search yourselves, see how good I am to you?.
Anyhol. (nominate that for word of the year, beats alcaway)
That space will always be special to the people of Christchurch, regardless of the ceremony.
It is a heart. -

Whatever.
From Joel Cayford’s comment on his own revelatory post from last June:The Cathedral has lost part or all of its spire 4 times (I think) due to earthquakes since being built. Apparently there was pride at it being the tallest structure in the world – given how earthquake prone the land it stands on has always been. Very kiwi.
The Cathedral has been telling us something for more than a century. Don’t build these kinds of structures on shakey sand.

Somebody called me "Bright" tonight. I was so impressed by their insight.
Joe has now proven them wrong.

Not out to prove anything Steve, cheer up.
I'm not really sure what you meant by the land having been chosen for a reason. Presumably not for the same reason as my ancestor who arrived in Lyttelton on ship #13 (too late to be one of the elect) and rejected his allocation of flood-prone land in central Christchurch in favour of a spot in the sandhills.Interesting video JT. While I'm inclined to feel a certain sympathy for the poor old Anglicans, the deconsecration felt like a bit of a closed shop. That curly crozier isn't really a talking stick/speaking staff, in that they don't appear to actively share it around.
Some elements of the Church appear to be coping in their own goofy way. How about Spanky, dog collar & all, referring to the cathedral as "the old girl".

BTW Mayor Bob was too busy with urgent planning matters to attend the deconsecration. Not too busy though to attend yesterday's NZ Trotting Cup, where Her Ditziness the Mayoress participated in a 'celebrity' sulky race.

Was he wearing a HiViz vest? I did notice that when our "Prime Minister" visited, his HiViz vest had a BNZ logo..
How cool was that?... eh? -

merc,
Father; I built my house on swamp, they said I was mad, that it would sink, it did, so I built another one, that sank too, so I built this one and here it stands...one day lad all this will be yours (sweeps arms expansively)...
Son; What, the curtains?
Father; No lad, not the curtains (sighs).Brass, or Monty Python.

Bob seems to have dropped the 'HiViz' of late. Here he is in relatively unsponsored mode at the City Mall reopening (caution advised if you've recently eaten).Even old TV stars have a shelf life it seems. Perhaps he was advised against the deconsecration on account of that stuff about the undead and crosses not playing well together.
-
Best Photo was of course Dean Peter Beck shaking hands with Bishop Vic Matthews.
It was a real drowned rat moment.Popped into the mall bought a box of sweeties from Mr Johnson. Not much else to see though.

A word to the wise on Swimming.
ECan and the Canterbury District Health Board warn that all waterways must still be avoided for 48 hours after heavy rain.

merc,
Don't swim in our inner harbours after rainfall either, or out west for that matter.
-
Hebe, in reply to

I'll be putting all swimming waters to the sniff test this summe., And if it looks foul it probably is; sewage overflows take a few hours to be reported and filed as reports usually.
-
merc,
The sniff test sadly is not real indicator, the best thing is to find out the state of the outflows after heavy rainfall. In Auckland this means that the water seems OK but is full of raw untreated sewerage after heavy rainfall due to the way that stormwater and sewerage are not separated after said heavy downpour events.
I surf and NZ is worse than France in this respect. France have the system that Christchurch should be putting in.
But they wont, Auckland is really bad also with no signs of improvement on the horizon.
