    Is it definitely “died” and not “dyed”? Because the latter could be a sheep-farming metaphor.

    you might be thinking of the expression dyed-in-the-wool and this raises daggy thoughts about blue arsed flies, and then that leads to Picts - who may, or may not, have been dipped in woad...

    ...but I digress (as usual...)
