  • Robyn Gallagher,

That's a good selection of words. My voting criteria - I look at words that have burst into popular culture in 2011 with a distinct new meaning, and that have a life offline as well as online.

As we have three hashtags in the list now, I wonder if there should be a separate prize for hashtag of the year. I mean, I've never heard anyone use "hash ar double-yew see twenty eleven" in speech so probably not a WOTY winner , but yet it was all over Twitter.

  • Ben McNicoll,

Russell, could you list the nominees in the post?

It would make it easier to consider before voting.

Unless I've missed the official nominee announcement somewhere?

I really can't work out the fuss about 'munted'. It's not as though it's a new word for 2011, spontaneously springing from the rubble of Christchurch. It has been around for at least 20 years to my knowledge.

Of course. But it is a word that found its destiny in 2011.

It's word of the year - not new word of the year. Otherwise it'd be a bit like awarding NZer of the year to a baby born in 2011...

Steve, seriously, while we were digging our arses out of liquifaction, cooking in our garages and crapping in our gardens, we were also supposed to invent a new word to describe the situation? Sorry we didn't live up to your standards.

Whoa, I didn't read that into Steve's comment at all. I have to admit, I hadn't associated "munted" particularly with #eqnz until this thread. And I don't think that fact can/should take anything away from the experiences of those who had.

  • Sacha,

Munted was well and truly claimed this year. The similarly frequent and #eqnz-linked "kia kaha" seems less fondly remembered here.

See, there's someone I don't pay a lot of attention to right there.

it might have been frequent (I don't actually think it was as frequent) but it didn't have the longevity, and Word of the Year favours things that were either recent or persistent. Kia kaha didn't resonate down here the way "munted" did. Some people (not me) found it patronising.

It's about the word not the personality. Jeez, anybody would think this were the general election.
