We do have the night market which is quite different to the ones in other areas. I'm not saying everything is perfect but I have found that it is a marked improvement on how it used to be. As a pedestrian I have to walk Clark St every morning and the traffic lights have removed the need to run the gauntlet - even if every second letter to the Western Leader seems to be a complaint on the number of lights in New Lynn.

Re. Xmas parade - since David Cunliffe "ruined" the Santa Parade for our and friends kids a few years ago by riding in the middle of the parade dressed as Santa and getting the kids prematurely excited, he is known in our house as Fake Santa - kind of appropriate really.

  • Kumara Republic,

I posted on Twitter some time ago a hypothesis about building a pair of geodesic spheres at ground floor level opposite the London Gherkin.

    True! Actually, it's a must.

Ahhh, Cunliffe as Santa. Well, quite. Would you rather Tim Groser? John Tamihere?

Well I should have said been a regular in New Lynn for past 25 years and before that the original Lynn Mall. Which has never been owned by Westfield,

AMP had it for a while and they did a major makeover in the late 90s. I think the owners of Sylva Park have it now.

Im not a fan of these 'tower block flats when the Auckland topography suits 3 to 4 residential levels. The HCNZ block in Lynfield is a good example not far away, and close to transport , shopping and schools. This is in line with the unitary plan (until the bureaucrats crank it up to 8 levels plus with discretionary planning.)

The library IS too small , as you would find if you visited regulary and is more crowded than its larger neighbour Avondale and nothing on the outstanding Birkenhead library( who host music ensembles) .
So much for those extra people expected to live close by. The new town hall is outstanding but is stuck on its own.

The new west gate development is further example of Architecture by Penny Hulse, old ideas that everyone else has moved on from with little regard to human scale or needs. Dreadful.

Found it... It was in response to a tweet by Craig about the London Shard.

I'd like to say something snarky about London's #Shard, but cities with Sky Towers shouldn't throw... anything. http://t.co/ZjFKiSj3

    My response:

And the Swiss Re tower could do with a couple of, um, modest geodesic globes near the entrance.

    And Craig's reply:

Someone somewhere should write a Ph.D. thesis on the psychosexual dynamics of castration anxiety in contemporary architecture.

To top it off, maybe a water fountain on top the Swiss Re roof? Oh wait, there'll be complaints... from Britain's civil aviation department.

  • Craig Ranapia,

When we were in London, we were staying at Greenwich so spent a fair amount of time waiting for trains at London Bridge – with the then incomplete Shard louring over a gigantic, gridlocked building site next door. Forget castration anxiety, it was the first time a building made me feel mildly claustrophobic. (I’d still like to know what Zombie Feud would make of Murdoch’s British newspapers and publishing interests all moving their editorial offices to the so-called ’Baby Shard’.)
