  • Emma Hart,

Heh, you too? I was really hoping they'd go back to Dr Who when they took off Stargate, and keep Monday Night Scifi sacred. My partner's already talking about running cable across our lounge.

  • Sue,

i assumed prime had torchwood and would play that first, but i hear tvnz has it. so maybe tvnz and prime are playing a game of chicken with their programming?

  • Craig Ranapia,

    Really liking 30 Rock

Oh boy, yes - and unlike Aaron Sorkin's painfully disappointing Studio 60 it's intentionally funny. Alec Baldwin seems to be having an indecent amount of fun playing a hyper-evolved reptile.

I concur about 30 Rock, Craig, and disagree about Studio 60. I'm really enjoying Matthew Perry, for some strange reason. As for Alec Baldwin, I know he abused his daughter on the phone, but he really is very yummy.

  • Danielle,

I love 30 Rock too, and I'm somewhere in the middle on Studio 60: the 'comedy' sucks *so much* that it hurts (and has to be put in quotation marks), and it's really rather pompous and self-important and unbelievable and poorly lit and every episode has a clunky line of dialogue that makes me bury my head in my hands and... well, the list of faults goes on. But its redeeming quality is that it's so stupendously All About Aaron Sorkin's Issues that I can't. look. away! Red states vs blue states: check. Flyover states vs coasts: check. 'Quality' television vs 'reality' television: check. Brave Risk-Taking Thoughtful Entertainers against Big Bad Corporate and Governmental Interests: check. Aaron Sorkin's Christian girlfriend who he broke up with because she went on The 700 Club: check. Apparently it gets even crazier as the season goes on!

And yeah, Matthew Perry is good in it. I do like him.

To hideously misquote M. Loaf, one out of two ain't bad. :) Sorkin's work always depends on how much solemn pomposity you can stomach at any given moment - The West Wing? Nummy. Malice and The American President, not so much... and when you come to A Few Good Men it's almost beside the point, because Tom Cruise and Jack Nicolson are gnawing away at the scenery like termites on P.

Don't really know if a thinly disguised SNL can really bear the weight of all that significance, nor am I really interested in Sorkin's substance abuse or sociopolitical angst.

And let's face it, I couldn't imagine Matthew Perry ever nailing (let alone Sorkin writing) a line as elegantly set-up as "those shoes are definitely bi-curious".

  • Peter Darlington,

Well, my favourite moment on the box last weekend was the masturbatory advice talk by the uncle to the youngest son on Weeds.

Frighteningly adventurous is all I'm going to say...

I rather like 30 Rock too, Alec Baldwin is great and Tina Fey (?) is even better.

Can anyone tell me what happened in the end of The Best Man last night? I saw up to the bit where they were leaving the wedding reception and am very curious...

  • 3410,

    The Best Man

    The Detective kept investigating, so
The best man stabbed him, then
The best man found out that the wife was going to the cops, so
    he tracked her down, and
    tried to silence her, but
during the struggle fatally fell of a cliff. Then
    the husband turned up, and
tried to stangle and drown her, but
she killed him with a rock.

Turns out it was the husband wot murdered the girl, all those years ago.

I know it's "No Twice Told Tales Please' but

Posted by me on 11 Jul 07..

If anyone's interested I've seen two episodes of 30 Rock (starting this Sunday on TV3) and I quite enjoyed them.... I know Studio 60 didn't find an audience in the US and has been axed but I'm enjoying it.

I don't think the latter is as bad as the critics have made out, but I do agree that the comedy skits featured within the show aren't that funny. But the same could be said about SNL.

An interesting non-story about TV3's new breakfast show, due around RWC, in the Herald on Sunday. Was Alison Mau auditioning via the newspaper?

Yeah, me too. I like 'em both, but if one had to be canned I'd have picked 30 Rock, and I love Alec Baldwin. 30 Rock is kick-back mindless fun, Studio 60 is a drama about a comedy. (Though the episodes where they have to rescue a cast member arrested while dressed as Jesus in Buttfcuk, Redstate are hilarious.) I expected to find Matthew Perry teeth-grindingly awful, he's great. And spotting the West Wing injokes is fun in a dreadful nerdygrrl kind of way.

I never saw most of Sorkin's stuff - except for a few episodes of Sports Night which I liked just because it had Robert Guillaume in it - so maybe that would explain why I don't find it wearing.

    What do you mean???!

    Well, I'm not sure now.

AltTV's UHF broadcast ceased about 3 days ago. A notice on their news page said that they would from now on only be streaming on the 'net. At least I think that's what it said - can't confirm because that notice has been removed.

Website now seems to indicate that they'll continue on Sky 65 (though I never noticed whether or not it always has been), which is better than nothing, I suppose. Either way, my (non-Sky) telly now has some Chinese channel where the Alt should be.

Well, if that's the grand plan - good luck to TVNZ counter-programming all that swearing, bloodshed and 'omnisexuality' (i.e. John Barrowman getting off with everyone and everything) against family-friendly Doctor Who at 7.30. Three certainly bottled out at putting Galactica back in the Saturday primetime slot they ran season one in. :)

Certainly, Studio 60 has nothing on Sports Night for bludgeoning their viewers with "the issues".

AltTV's UHF broadcast ceased about 3 days ago.

They still exist, but apparently they couldn't afford both the Auckland free-to-air frequency and the Sky slot. They've opted for Sky.

Mine also, and if you missed it, someone on TV.com has lovingly transcribed it here. Brings new meaning to the name Pearl Jam.

Re Doctor Who and Torchwood, wouldn't have a clue, they always say "sometime later in the year". Yes, well, it would be wouldn't it? I wonder what they'll replace Primeval with however, as it's only six eps long and finishes August 15.
