• Danielle,

O God I have been watching "Rock of Love" ... feel my shame. But what a cast. Most of the more "whore-endous" characters are gone but there is still Lacey, who is clearly possessed and whose eyes wander around madly like Marty Feldman's.

Rock of Love is the work of a mad genius. I adore it. The women just can't stay away from that stripper pole, and Bret's interviews are basically reiterations of the same sentiment over and over: 'she kind of turned me on'. It doesn't matter what those women do, they excite him. At this point, I'm thinking a pet rock in a crotchless onesie would turn him on. I can't wait for Rock of Love II.

But OMG! Did youse guys see it tonight??? Although I missed like the last second, I will still admit to shedding a wee almost-tear when (SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN TONIGHT'S) Craig found Alice.

• Hamboy,

Hmmm....ok....absolutely.... on my life... I swear I saw BSG series 3 box set at whitcolls, while I was doing my christmas shopping. I was going to get it, but I had already spend far too much on myself and thought it would be out at the video store.
Might have to go back there and check this afternoon.

Is anyone on that fragging show not a toaster?
Or is that the plot for series 5, they discover that they are really toaster experiment.

You almost certainly did. It's been out for some time in NZ.

Unfortunately, getting an early R4 release means it lacks all of the special features that the season 3 set gets in the US. The one time they don't screw us on waiting time, they screw us on content...

He's Awesome. She's Awesome. The whole show is Awesome.

I missed the last 5 minutes on Tuesday, and I know if I look up the results on-line, I'll spoil myself. So did he kick out the lovely tatooed Samantha because she didn't party long enough on his birthday and doesn't like he other chicks using Brett as a stripper pole, or did he kick out Magdelina because she's a pet-rock in a crotchless onesie?

I thought it was great. Great location, excellent performances (especially Toni Potter as Alice) and a highly amusing tilt into the grammar of splatter movies. The loooooong story arc hasn't always held my attention, but the conclusion has been top fun.

"if john returns to having ties, some of us might switch back"

If Campbell takes off the tie then take off the suit.

The Sports Crews have various branded shirts but a suit without a tie is obsolete.

twas great, especially since they broke s/street rules and allowed a conclusion (i know....there will be tremors for a while yet) on a wednesday night. It helped ramp up the tension to a delicious level. shouting at the screen "no craig, dont leave her there.....dont do it,,,,,,"

Stargate would be the shining example - why did it keep going ...

Stargate movie just out, 'ark of truth' what a steaming pile of crud, good on them for tying up the orai storyline. It would have been substandard even as a normal episode though!

... Key plot idea: hero gets locked in room at the start of the episode and spends the next 45 mins analysing their relationships with people.

funny, i just did a catch up of the last three episodes of Stargate Atlantis (the wifey loves it, you must understand......atlantis is better than SG1....not sure that I would recomend to anyone though) . and there it was, three characters stuck in a room. cue tension, bonding, development.

• philipmatthews,

Thought they did a good job with the last few minutes of Shortland Street last night as well -- as Russell says, the splatter stuff in the corridors. Would have liked to see him live to be tried or sent to the madhouse, though -- the death was a little too tidy (well, not literally).

Speaking of The Wire, there's an interesting roundtable discussion at the House Next Door, a really great US film and TV site, in which the relative merits of The Wire, The Sopranos and Deadwood are weighed up by three critics. As in, which is the best of the three shows? I'd always have said Sopranos, but this sends me back to Deadwood, which I pretty much missed.

• daleaway,

Jackie, I tried to persevere with Men in Trees (despite thinking Ann Heche could not carry a series) because it was so obviously drawing inspiration from (I didn't use the derivative word) my favourite old series Northern Exposure. But it soon proved several dozen IQ points lower than Northern Exposure, hardly using the creative potential of the setting at all. It's just another shallow, predictable US soap and might as well be filmed in LA sound stages.

I won't be seeing Campbell or Shorty, so long as they are running Antiques Roadshow on the Living Channel at 7pm. Mmmmm! Really interesting old stuff! Experts! Surprises! British snobbery! Huge wads of dosh! No New Zealand politicians!
What's not to love?

if you like slowburn drama, thought the language in Angels in America was divine, and aint afraid of a little cussin' (actully a heroic quantity of cussin') I can wholeheartedly recommend Deadwood.

Ooooh, I'd definitely watch that then! Oh wait, you mean he'd put on something else? Nevermind.

And I second the Deadwood appreciation. I always missed it on TV so the DVDs were brilliant, because one hour of whores and cocksuckers a week is just not enough.

He should at least take off the 'shirt that requires a tie'. Something about it makes him look like Paul Holmes, and I could really do without that. Or an American politician pretending to be an Average Joe.

However. The Crowd Goes Wild's 'Who Stole John Campbell's Ties' recreation ( a la Campbell's stolen medals interview) was brilliant.

• Fiona Rae,

Torchwood is great!

Second season so much more tonally together than the first season; that was meant to be all adult with shagging and stuff, but they couldn't curb their adolescent glee at a sexy cybergirl battling a pterodactyl. Anyways, check out this EW review; they admit they don't get it, but actually I think it's pretty accurate.

Finding it hard to believe that anything on The Crowd Goes Wild is brilliant, but will take your word for it.

• Kebabette,

Be gentle with him Fiona ...

I'd add in "Carnivale" to The Sopranos/Deadwood/The Wire circle of excellence ...

Oh and isn't it weird seeing dirty ole Calamity Jane from Deadwood being the bosscop in "Life" ... that show is growing on me mostly due to gingergod Damian Lewis and offsider Alan Arkin.

Ah, that wonderful stand-by of sci-fi television the 'bottle show' -- one set, as few actors as possible, no FX to speak of and put the money you save elsewhere without resorting to that kiss of death... the clip show.

I must admit I've never really warmed to Stargate: Atlantis, mostly because I spend way too much thinking "they did this on SG1 four or five years back, and did it so much better." An fatigue, d while I do think the last three seasons of SG1 were definitely suffering from *cough* creative fatigue, my geek heart melts at the sight of Farscape alumni Ben Browder and Claudia Black. And the 200th episode -- imaginatively titled __200__, took the opportunity to send up itself, and every SF cliche you could think of, with malicious glee.

Or is that the plot for series 5, they discover that they are really toaster experiment.

Sadly, season four is it and if even a fraction of the spoiler/speculation on the fan boards is accurate, Ron Moore makes the Shortland Street Serial Killer look like a wussie. And apparently both the Cylons and Colonials do find Earth, and have a very good reason to wish they hadn't. Be careful what you wish for, because the universe will give it to you. Hard:)

Hmmm....ok....absolutely.... on my life... I swear I saw BSG series 3 box set at whitcolls, while I was doing my christmas shopping. I was going to get it, but I had already spend far too much on myself and thought it would be out at the video store.

I'm still pissed that JB Hi-Fi are selling a box set of the mini-series and seasons 1-3 for $119.99. Let's just say I thought the bare-bones S3 box was over-priced, which won't stop be paying full list for Razor when it comes out.

There's some pretty wacky pricing on DVDs out there.
Single disc crap titles can sell for the same price as 3-movies-on-3-discs-in-same-box.

eg. You can buy Wizard of Oz for $29, or Wizard of Oz (with 2 other kids movies) for $29. (Not to say WoZ is crap, mindyou)

I bought a Brokeback Mountain and Geisha twin disc set for $18 at Xmas at JB's which I thought was good value (but then my wife wouldn't let me give it to our cleaner cos he's gay. Evidently that's like giving Once Were Warriors to a Maori. Or Enter The Dragon to a Chinese neighbour. Or ... etc etc)

Mostly, though. The three-in-box thing are worse special-features/second disc wise. You can also buy a Three-Disc special edition of The Wizard of Oz for $35.

In short, early buyers (like early adopters) get financially screwed. I was most annoyed when I bought the first release special edition (two discs) of Pearl Harbor when I found out about the three-disc set coming out a few months later (one of the best ever DVD sets, btw, when I finally got around to getting it). I think the best early buyers can hope for is fancy packaging (perhaps a cardboard slip cover). Three movies in a single dvd case just looks wrong.

and when the do it well they do it really really well, the final episode of the final season of SG1 was a humdinger worthy of Vonnegut (almost), and a real curve ball for the the formulists, thanks for reminding me.

paying full list for Razor when it comes out.

yeppo, its got me fully hooked and champing at the bit for the new series. and i will be buying the DVD, unlike the SG1 DVDmovie, I cant reward that kind of crud, hollow are the Orai.

Plus, how do you file it alphabetically? Very vexing! Heh.

I really must get around to renting Carnivale sometime, I'm sure I'll like it. But first I gotta find the time to watch My So-Called Life and see if it's still as good as when I was 15 (answer: probably not).
