This is lovely Hilary, a fitting tribute and record, such a dexterous use of language with a keen wit to boot.

  • Hilary Stace,

Another interesting piece of information about my mother was that the local doctor who assisted at her birth in 1917 was Margaret Cruickshank, who then became her godmother. Dr Cruickshank was one of the first NZ woman doctors and is commemorated with a statue in Waimate. Unfortunately She died the following year in the flu epidemic.

  • Hilary Stace,

We have been looking through my mother's large portfolio of poems. Here is one appropriate for Waitangi Day week.

    Back

    my husband's uncle
    who I remember
    could remember his grandmother
    who could remember Hone Heke
    She was a missionary's daughter
survived - like her grandson - into old age
but never forgot those early days
    the threats and the excitement
    her Maori remained fluent.....

  • Fraser Gardyne,

Outstanding. Having lost parents there are so many conversations you wish you could still have. :-)

  • Hilary Stace,

Today we are celebrating my late mother's 100 year birthday and wondering what haiku she could have crafted from current global events.

Could be a whole new protest genre.
