  • Tom Semmens,

When I am sitting in my world cup Fuhrer bunker (AKA my lounge) I have one dark cloud of paranoia flitting across the otherwise azure sky of my complacency at an assured All Black win.

1/ Laporte has powerful friends in the French government.

2/ Our innocent Anglo-Saxon heritage means we can only begin to guess at what sort of base perfidies those Gallic snail munchers are capable of stooping to.

3/ Laporte is making a BIG deal about drug testing.

SO I suspect (but only in my paranoid moments, understand) the Frogs will be on the juice, with the dastardly swine of the DGSE ensuring not only is this not detected, but the suspect samples are re-labelled with All Black names.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

and as for robyn starting this meme, sheila, take a bow.

Aw, thanks. Looks like I started something I couldn't finish.

I guess Justin is just nostalgic for the days when he was the boy with the Thorne in his side ...

That was coffee-out-the-nose funny, ow! Who would have thought that Smiths song title and rugby would make such a great pairing?

  • merc,

And I for one have an innate mistrust of blokes who bleach their hair blonde...being a hardcore surfer is the only way to achieve that look with integrity.

Point of history, no hardcore surfer ever bleached, the sun just did it anyway, it used to indicate a lengthy spell (some months) far away and out the back.
I have ignored the use of the term surfer up to now (surfin teh web!!!!) but cannot let this one pass, sorry.

  • cctrfred,

With fear and trembling, I'll attempt to defend Justin. For the record I'm a Tasman fan and will cheer on most provinces playing against Canterbury. Remember Justin is a halfback - players in his position do a lot of talking on the field, so stream-of-conciousness comment comes naturally. And I believe the All Blacks lost the semi-final four years ago due to two things: that intercept (why didn't Carlos run instead of pass?); and the Wallabies George Smith crunching Marshall in a very late tackle. Smith should have been yellow-carded or possibly sent off for (what looked like) a calculated vicious attempt to take Marshall out. Marshall tried to play on but the injury prevented him making his usual top contribution to the game.

  • LegBreak,

cctrfred, If Justin had gone off injured as he should have after that tackle, we would still have had a chance.

But oh no, he couldn't depart the big stage so easily, people were watching, and he was a passenger for the next 30 minutes as Aussie took full advantage.

    The nadir of selfishness.

He still strikes me as the kind of guy who walks up to women in nightclubs and says 'Hey babe, it's your lucky day'. Probably while tossing his curls and looking round for Tom Hanks.

  • Hadyn Green,

At this point i shamefully admit a dearth of knowledge about The Smiths.

I will say to Craig though, we are fully allowed to complain about the refs if they don't do their job correctly. However, I don't think anyone will buy it from us this time around.

And I always thought JM was a bit of a whinger, who played well when surrounded by others playing well.

  • Peter Darlington,

But, for now, I'm just waiting for 11.45 tomorrow night. Finally, this thing starts. There is nothing to keep in reserve now. I'm not nervous yet, but this is going to be a long six weeks.

Ok, time for a NZ prediction or two then:

    1. Dan Carter is going to get injured

    2. Andy Ellis will be called on for some significant game time late in the tournament

    3. Sivivatu will be our top try scorer

    4. Ali Williams will be yellow carded at some point

    5. Collins or So'oialo will be our on-field captain at the end of our last game

And I always thought JM was a bit of a whinger, who played well when surrounded by others playing well.

I always thought Marshall was an extra loose forward, which can be useful in the league-style phase attack game played so often in the tight ones.

and let him talk. yappity yap, George Gregan, etc. halfbacks eh? even the big ones...

finally, I always reckoned Jonah was STILL a No.8. shoulda come back off the back, not out wide.

Howlett to score a hat-trick tomorrow.

  • LegBreak,

I’ve seen the expression “the zenith of bravery, or the nadir of stupidity?” used on more than one occasion so I thought the nadir of selfishness was OK.

Happy to be proved wrong though.

  • merc,

In the old days there used to be an extra forward who was half a back, but mostly called fly half? Other players called them seagulls, me Grand dad was one...

Sitting on my desk is the match programme from th 1999 semi final against France. It lists the three half backs as Marshall (34 caps), Kelleher (3 caps) and Rhys Duggan (uncapped). My biggest concern when Weepu got dumped was the lack of depth we have at halfback in this squad, and the rest of your predictions worry me greatly too! (esp number 5!)

FWIW, I'd always go into bat for Marshall as a player, but when he opens his gob it can be as embarrassing as watching Kelleher sing the national anthem.

  • Danielle,

I think I might be the sporting equivalent of Morrissey at his most morose. I am horribly worried about NZ teams in high pressure situations, and usually expect the worst. Yet I force myself to watch everything, in a frenzy of worry punctuated by moments of sheer terror and very occasional joy. It's all quite stressful. Call me morbid, call me pale.

  • Tony Kennedy,

Bit of a sporting wonderland at the moment - if the stars align nicely we will in about 7 weeks time see AB's getting the worlds biggest sporting monkey off their backs, the Warriors winning the NRL, and Liverpool still top of the table :)

go with 2 of 3 - Liverpool is a bit of a stretch
