I like it, it'd be like having our own (Southern) Rugby World Cup every year on TV, and every 2 or 4 years locally. When the road-show rolled through town you'd get more local publicity and interest than the current system. Share the games around the main cities and run a few out in the smaller places to spread the joy - a big 4 (or 5 or whatever) nations game coming to town once every few years would stir up places like Rotovegas or Napier and bring the punters in from the hinterland.
Good lateral thinking from the Dropkicks, someone (I'm looking at you IRB) buy them a beer -
Plus (thinking further afield) taking the show over to Argentina regularly would raise the profile of the sport in that neck of the woods, maybe the odd demo game in Uruguay etc.

I quite agree. Saturday night, lads?

Where that first game was considered an upset, the win against Scotland was not.
That's for sure!
Scotland haven't beaten Argentina since 1990. Argentina have now won 6 or 7 straight over them.
On the downside for Argentina this weekend they are 0-11 v South Africa.

On the touring idea. While it has some merits..... if SA had it in 08, OZ in 09 and NZ in 10 then the poor South African fans would literally go 3-4 years without seeing the ABs or Wallabies in the flesh and the same would be repeated for fans in the other countries.
That sure as hell ain't gonna happen.
The simple solution is to have one test v each of South Africa, Aussie, and Argentina and then have the top two play off at the venue not used in their 'pool' match. All over in 5 weeks, two matches a weekend, games in each country.
A better solution is to get the pacific Islands in the mix in some capacity.
But it will never happen. They can't get their best players available (and for that matter Argentina won't be able to either).
-
It don't look that hot for a Arg vs Fr final. But on the other hand, a week ago, the ABs were a dead cert.

Hmmm... Someone keeps sending us this whisky you see. The trouble is that it's delicious, and we keep drinking it.
This past Tuesday one of the Dropkicks was woken by his partner, who found him sleeping in their garden, at 9pm.
Pending forgiveness, you've got a deal.

Could have been worse. Could have been 9__am__.

But the NH would still tour down here and you'd get a larger turnout for those games (not to mention a larger turnout for the Maori ABs games).
Remember the Eden Park test this year when nobody went? That would be sold out. Also we could do a deal with the IRB to say that if we do this the NH teams would have to play more games here (and/or also bring their B-squads to play pick games against the Maori ABs and provincial teams).

In the moving-right-along spirit, speculation that Nucifora could exercise a clause in his Blues contract to get a release so he can coach the Wallabies.
I think I speak for the majority of Blues supporters in saying: Yes! Yes! Yes!
We'll have that Gatland bloke, thanks. Hell, we'll have Pat Lam if it comes to it.
I suppose it's too late to bring Ali Williams back?

Graeme Henry might be looking for work...

Love the idea.
One of the things we've been robbed of over recent years is the huge sense of occasion big games used to have.
This idea would restore some of that.

The Blues have never won the Super tournament without him you know ...

Hence the shared hosting idea (NZ & OZ one year, SA and Argentina the next). That way it's only every second year you miss out.

Another $33,000 night on the town was it?
Did you manage to avoid falling through any windscreens?

Increasing the Tri-Nations matches was one of the most boneheaded moves ever. I keep thinking this format is all about getting Daryl and Sheila aussie interested in Rugby Union by offering them the same 'product' every year than giving the actual rugby fans what they want.
For me, I'd rather have good old tours, you know, three match series, playing the provincial teams and that. That's proably unrealistic in this day and age, so maybe we could make the Tri Nations a Quad Nations and have it every other year, with tours on the off year?
We'll have that Gatland bloke, thanks
Mitts OFF! He's Waikato's.

But that's kind of the point. In the olden days NZ would tour SA every 8-10 years, and vice versa. Combine that with the fact that bastards kept winning is what made them the great enemy. Anyway there is no stopping unions scheduling an extra Bledisloe etc outside the 4N.
I think the touring idea is a great one, however I would like to see a provincial (S14) toury too that includes Argentina - IMHO it is essential that the Argies have a domestic professional competition of a high standard that feeds into the National side. (though given their success with players plying their trade in Europe, they might think otherwise :) ) -

Exactly. Reading Warwick Roger's Old Heroes, I was really nostalgic (if you can be nostalgic about days you weren't technically alive for, that is) for the days when people were just genuinely bloody excited about a rugby tour, without feeling the need to rush out and buy figures from a gas station, or kit themselves out in official gear to 'show their support'. That scarcity translates to a Rugby event that really means something, ie Lions' tours, World Cups etc.

Er ... these would be the Apartheid years, right?

Your point IO?
I could have added that they prevented us from picking our Maori players to tour until the 1960s and that's why they kept winning. (and that the NZRU acceded to their demands) -
Big tours every 8-10 years aren’t sustainable these days.
The “product” (Pay TV) must have something EVERY year. That way they keep the NRL honest.
-

That was our premise. These days there's just so, much, bloody, rugby.
It's actually, forgive me for saying it, becoming a little boring.
A tour would be like the circus coming to town! Remember how great that used to be!
The money can flow from TV rights. Happy crowds make for good TV.

I know this will sound like heresy, but I actually don't care as much about the international game as I do about the state of the provincial game. To me the question is - could a 18 team, two pool Air New Zealand Cup, with the All Blacks playing and up to four Australian teams & a Pacific Islands Barbarians, a top five play off (best two from each pool plus next highest from either pool) make as much money as the Super 14? I reckon one of the biggest turn off factors in rugby right now is the number of mis-matches going on. We need to learn from the AFL and NRL here I think. A proper draft & pool seedings based on last seasons results and really competitive tussles across multiple home grounds would pull massive gate receipts IMHO, and generate excellent TV coverage rights and sponsorship.

No we'd get moderate events each year against differing opposiotion, punctuated by a RWC every four years. What we wouldn't get is the f##king Boks three time a year every year! This isn't a dig at them. We had three summers in a row of Sri Lanka touring. Love their work, but three years in a row (tsnami I think) was a bit much.
-
ANY cricket tour of more than 2 tests seems like a luxury these days…
One of the things I’ve liked about this RWC (the best ever IMHO) is that with the teams developing (or going backwards in a couple of cases) you get to know the teams and their players, and see how it all evolves.
You used to be able to do that in those long tours too.
