  • buzzy,

    @Mark Thomas

    HDTV programmes quickly fill up the hard drive (file sizes of up to 6GB per hour). There doesn't seem to be an easy way to compress the video files (h264 within a *.wtv container file).

    - Have you looked at GB-PVR? It's free and has the ability to transcode to H.264 automatically. Very handy if you're low on disk space.

    @Steve Barnes

    as many tuners as you have slots in your comp

    - As of GB-PVR 1.3ish, DVB-T tuners can record multiple channels on the same Mux. In non-technobabble, this means that with two tuners you can record all channels at the same time.

  • Russell Brown,

    Right, there ends my advertising speal for the day - and I didn't even get the box for free! What a gip... ;-)

    It's working! I told someone today who was looking for a cheaper DVR with takeaway ability to check out your posts ;-)

    While we're geekin' out, I have Eye TV on my Macs, and it works pretty well delivering and recording Freeview HD -- although it certainly lacks some of the nice features Steve described in GB PVR.

    It can also allow the iMac to be used a game console monitor, and capture video from an AV source, including to my Macbook from the MySky (although I need to find my s-video cable -- the composite picture is kind of nasty).

    The software is well-supported and its stability has improved a lot with updates since I got it. It also seems to export well to a bunch of formats, including DV, which is handy if you're taking it into a professional editing environment.

    Cool! I think the RRP of $400 is a bit pricey, but it should be possible to pick up the box for cheaper than that (I think I saw it for somewhere in the $300s at Harvey Norman over the weekend). Worst case scenario - you have a tuner box that you can attach to an old TV/VCR to pick up all the new channels.

    Incidentally, if your guy has any questions about the box, feel free to flick them my email address (I assume you can get it from my login details here) and I'll see if I can help based on my own experience with it.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

    Problems with Freeview DVRs...

    I want to record John Key on Letterman.

    The ad on Prime TV says it will be on at 6pm on Friday.

    Prime TV website say it will be on at 6pm on Friday and 6pm on Monday.

    Freeview EPG says 6pm Friday is Who wants to be a Classic Millionaire?, and that 7pm Monday will be John Key. When and what do I record?

    America's Next Top Model at 7pm? ;-)

    Seriously though - apparently it's at 6pm and 11pm on Monday. See here.

    I think there's a delay for Letterman, so the Friday session is probably the previous week/day's show.

    Simple Sir. Just set up a video camera and a picture of Letterman with a big brain-dead gap toothed grin then sit down and stream clichéd platitudes whilst smiling like an insurance salesman.
    That should do the trick.

    Letterman is always delayed, it shows late evening est, which is late afternoon nz time.

    I think Friday's show is a specially quick broadcast of their Thursday night show with John Key. In which case it will be delayed on a couple of hours.
