  • dyan campbell,

Like everyone else, I am certainly going to be watching the final Outrageous Fortune (I'm guessing Wolf comes back) but I just wanted to remind everyone Nick Dwyer's excellent Making Tracks is going to be on at 10:00 (on the music channel C4) and I think it's going to be Chris Knox's classic Love Not Given Lightly getting the treatment tonight.

    Amongst other things.

Even though we have never been there together, I know exactly the spot you mean.

I'm on the other side of both those debates with Emma and Megan.

I am aware that part of my problem with Pascalle is that she reminds me of an ex-girlfriend.

That aside, I do still value smart/cunning/bastardly over nice. In general. My partner and close friends manage to be smart AND nice.

    [Torchwood Spoilers follow.]

    I digress, but

    ...as with Ianto in Torchwood.

I read this comment and decided to look up the character being referred to, because I've only just started watching Torchwood and I'm not used to the character/actor names (except Jack Harkness). Obviously, to regular viewers of the show, I encountered a bit of a spoiler, but it was worth it.
I found the debate over the death of Ianto quite interesting.

Anyway, back to OF... 22 minutes to go.

Sadly it seems that http://www.outrageousfortune.co.nz/ has crashed even before the show starts. Hope they're shoring things up properly for the during and the afterwards.

And I can't see how it can finish tonight - how can that all be wrapped up in one show?

I'm surprised it's not a two hour finale, but apparently it isn't.

I cannot understand how anyone can consider Ianto's death to be homophobia without the balance of their mind being seriously disturbed.

Just as well I got MySky. Right in the middle of the show, I have to conduct a muscle car sale. Looks like true bogans don't put OF before that, he absolutely insisted it could be done on the internet, had to be done tonight. I probably shouldn't have let the car rip quite so hard when I took him for a test drive, I think I flipped some switch in his head. But I'll catch yoooz up by the end, eh? A richer, wiser man. I'll keep telling myself that....bye bye MR2 :-(

Also disturbing how often "OMFG RTD is homophobic" bleats were followed by astoundingly offensive (if not downright misogynistic) smack about Eve Myles. FFS, it's hard enough getting around the stereotype that SF geeks are sad little chaps who view non-porn ladyparts the same way Superman views Kryptonite.

Well that was quite sweet. I'm actually glad nothing overtly dramatic/tragic happened, and it just ... ended. And with a concluded feel, but not too tidy.

LOL, Van has to learn Tolkien. The Horror. As Tolkien said of his own book, I shall say of OF "It was too short". Still good, but. No comeuppances, though?

I was hoping someone would bottle Jethro, but Evil Lawyer Bitch (whose name I can't remember right now) for whom "let's fix your mother fixation" constitutes foreplay is an acceptable substitute. More or less.

That's pretty much how I feel.

My favourite line: "We are Tool Guys and we are choice".

Great scene when Pascalle told Loretta that she'd turned into Cheryl.

  • Sam F,

A good final, but not quite as stonkingly good as the last six seasons had made me dare to hope for.

I too was waiting for things to go down in a proper shitstorm. Grandpa and his partner (whose name escapes me) became utterly unbearable this season and needed a proper sorting out; the caravan should have just been the start. Ditto Jethro and Bailey. And where was Wolf?

But we still got lots of good stuff. Notably for me, that last nicely turned exchange between Pascall and Cheryl, where lesser shows might have pulled out a last-minute miraculous reconciliation in a big shiny bow. And it all ended with Cheryl as is right and proper.

Also, wow, trending 6th of 10 worldwide on Twitter right now!

  • Matthew Littlewood,

Don't want to comment on the final episode yet, but seeing as lots of people have been doing it, here are some of my favourite OF moments, in no particular order.

    1. Munter and Van steal the community constable vehicle and torch it. Classic.
    2. Gerrad explains to Van how he got his cellphone number. "I'm a detective. I fucking detected it."
    3. In order to stop Loretta's baby getting adopted, the West family, led by Wolf, gatecrash the unsuspecting adoptees' home. I suppose it counted as some sort of social commentary.
    4. Loretta's reaction to when Pascalle reveals what she and Judd have...done. As others have mentioned, brilliantly observed.
    5. The whole episode where Van goes completely off the rails to the tune of Dimmer's "One Breath at a Time". The show knew exactly the right song for exactly the right moment.
    6. Pascall's "Best Handbag Ever".
    7. Loretta finds out exactly what sort of person her grandmother was...and has to break the news to Grandpa.
    8. Aaron Spiller on Excellence.
    9. Munter in general. (I could list a whole lot, but y'know, it's just Munter).
    10. The whole subplot dealing with Gary Savage, probably the most interesting of the peripheral characters and certainly the one I wish they used more.

    Oh well, those will do!
Anyway, despite the fact I felt it was more flawed than is given credit for, and certainly there were times it was too self-indulgent by half, on the whole it was something oddly remarkable. Funny, moving and strangely acute, I don't know whether we will quite see its like again.

And Grant Bowler himself has been a notorious public twatcock about OF after working on it, so he wasn't likely to be welcomed back.

Really? I must've missed that- what did he say? It's a shame, because he was arguably the most charismatic presence of the show, and I've liked him in everything else I've seen him in.

I'm picking Pascalle and Wayne to run off together tonight, though I'm not sure I'm happy.

    1...

I think Van and his girl will get married tonight.

    2 for 2!

Felt very much like a wrap up show - characters getting tidied up between the ad breaks. Would have liked a two hour special.

This did actually occur to me while I was watching.

Yeah -- surprised the network didn't demand it -- but I'm okay with what we got.

It's interesting that a season that began with a police car being torched ended with such a focus on resolution for the characters. A number of intuitions expressed here about the characters were made concrete. Like, someone actually said to Loretta that she was Cheryl.

I found myself oddly moved by the wedding vows. "You may now pash the bride" is a wonderful line.
