Kevin raises the matter of salaries etc.Given the amount of funding that gets to disability organisations, I'm inclined to believe that the smaller organisations have very little room for bloat of any kind. Having been in there scrabbling for money to keep a smallish DPO afloat, and well aware of others in a similar position I'm aware the government rhetoric about support for disabled people and disability services far outstrips what they had out. There may be a few of the bigger organisations where the top level is getting a fair level of salary, but they are few and far between. And most of the lower down staff are paid very modestly indeed

Aah damn it Adrian (and Kevin): I suspect it's me being a technobunny. One can navigate to the conversation and copy the link at the top, but it probably does nothing beyond taking one to the Suffrage 125 page, not to the actual post. If there's an easy-ish way of linking to it, I'd be very happy indeed to know. In my defence, I did learn to write with pen and inkwell, so I've not done too badly in the keeping up with technology stakes.

I have to say I could only wish it was only due to the organisers and it was the first time they'd ever heard of the issue. It's quite true, they do constitute a substantial part of the problem/solution. But they are only part of it, and focussing only on them lets all the other feminists off the hook.
You can be sure we'll be talking with WA though- plans have been hatched. -

Glad you modified that post Chelle: I have seen far too many posts that assert accessible loos are for wheelchair users only, which is exclusionary of many of the rest of us who may need to use an accessible loo but don't "look" disabled. (always amazes me how many of us are instant identifier experts based on appearances)
I've also seen the endless threads about keys to accessible loos: gets disabled Australians particularly exercised. Particularly when they start to consider the difficulties of keys in different states, to be followed by some appallingly complex structure to issue the perfect universal key. This is often followed by "how can we monitor this?".
My vision, pie in the sky as it may be, is to have all toilets accessible, not to have the token one on another floor/in another building/ locked etc. All of the toilets. All of the time. Everywhere.
Until that happens, I predict several million squillion re-runs of this, a really genuine issue. -

As I watch the somewhat predictable cries of "pay it back now" from those with too much moral outrage on their hands, I keep thinking that they really have no idea. How exactly is this magical mythical amount to be instantly calculated?
It is far more likely that the presence of occasional flatmates would result in a diminution of the weekly benefit, not a total loss of benefit. So there would still have been some entitlement. Now W&I systems are mind-bogglingly Byzantine, and they have complex mathematical formulae to apply to virtually everything- accommodation supplement springs to mind as one of their more straightforward examples.
There would be all sorts of complex calculations to be made, then probably challenged at benefit review, as not every W&I operative gets things absolutely right, and the amount owed as calculated by them could well require adjustment and possibly re-re adjustment.
Meteria Turei is sensible to await what the functionaries of W&I have to say about amounts. If they do come up with a figure, she will do many other beneficiaries a favour if she has some of the excellent benefit advocates to check out their determinations, and perhaps challenges it. It will encourage others to hold them to account. -
