  • Hard News: The miserable archive,

Whether methamphetamine contamination in a dwelling is via use or manufacture the exposure risk is the same

You can also (in a weasel way) read it as true if you take "exposure risk" to mean the risk that you might get exposed to it.. instead of the implied "the risk of health affects after exposure".

  • Hard News: Loops and Diamonds, in reply to linger,

Possibly an idiot question, but given what “AA” actually stands for, it’s not immediately obvious: how can one become an AA member if only a cyclist without any driver’s license?

I suspect anyone that pays the fee will get a membership? They don't ask to see your license as far as I recall? (previous member, but not for 20+ years)

  • Hard News: The shared-use path that no…,

Also, just a word of warning for those who may not be frequent all-weather riders..

Although AT has put in a strip of that yellow tread material, there’s no bike signal at the crossing.

That yellow rubber(?) tread material is fine in the dry but dangerously slick in the rain…. Ride over it in a straight line with your wheels/frame vertical… If it’s wet, then nearly ANY sort of leaning or cornering palaver will have you off in fractions of a second… That may sound simple, but much of it that I cross is at places where I’m expected to turn at least a little…. (esp N-W cycleway St Lukes Rd crossing and K’Rd/Symonds St/Grafton bridge crossings)

  • Hard News: Paying for the storms to come,

Also, the predominant wind direction of the recent storm was not the more usual (for Auckland) nor-easterly, but a slightly northish westerly.. Putting stress on trees and stuff from non-usual directions seems to have brought down more trees and branches than usual for a storm of not-that-out-of-the-ordinary strength?

Also, despite updates and improvements Vector's website and APP are still not giving me the info I want… I have never lost power, but have no hot-water… it’s not the end of the world and far less bothersome than what others are dealing with… I completely understand (and agree with) Vector’s placing this at a lower priority than loss of power…

But a list of suburbs that have already had their hot water restored does not tell me that they know they have to fix mine… How about a list of ones not doen yet? No, that’s a secret.

I have twice reported the lack of hot-water on the App… once it acknowledged me with a dot on the map, but that dot has disappeared now, and did not show up a second time… So do they know parts of GreenBay have no hot water or not? I can't figure it out from their publicly shared info?

  • Speaker: The crisis is all around us,…, in reply to WH,

...but I’m a little confused about why Carol Hirschfeld lost her job.

She repeatedly misled her board superiors by stating to them that a requested in advance and diarised meeting, just happened as a chance event?

Now why she felt the need to do this in the first place is a completely different issue?

  • Hard News: The Unitec project: Something…, in reply to Sam F,

I do hope there are plans in the works to make the main Unitec backroad more cycle-friendly as part of the Wairaka Precinct plan.

More cycle & pedestrian friendly would be nice... and seems almost certain judging by the way such developments happen these days...

But just re-surfacing the existing roads would be a bloody good start... that has to be the worst hodge-podge of patchwork and poorly repaired pot-holes.... I've seen and used in a long time... A real 3D mosaic artwork collection, masquerading as a road surface... I expect that as an underfunded educational facility, Unitec were spending the very bare minimum on it's upkeep? I'm guessing that while the 30km speed limit was intended for student/faculty safety.. it's probably paid dividends in reducing the rate at which the patchwork wears out and needs more patches?

I genuinely cant imagine it wouldn't get improved in the long run, because +2500 dwellings worth of trucks, diggers, cranes and other heavy equipment is going to make it much worse very quickly...

  • Speaker: Are we seeing the end of MSM,…,

One of the (many) things that shits me about both Stuff and NZ herald is the "Australianisation" of what constitutes "local" news...

A lot of the "small" stories about some cat up a tree or a shop assistant that was insulted are in Sydney or Melbourne. FFS. No-one in NZ cares.

"Big stories" like an ex NZer accused of murder in Aus- fair enough... Aussie politician sex scandal- not personally interested, but maybe others are?.... but stories that are the like of which we expect to see in the Western Leader or Marlborough Mail about some school-kid doing good, or some other similar drivel... its only maybe interesting to people within 100km of where it happened... probably not the next state and certainly not another country... we have our own local "human interest" stories, thanks.

But you don't get to find out it's not a local interest story until you've clicked on it and got to the third paragraph... so the clicks get counted and more of the same shit gets served up again...
