  • Field Theory: Just a Glitch,

Tew was awful on Campbell Live last night. Clearly he has eyes only for the All Blacks, and seems to think they exist in a vaccuum. Sure they make the money, but with a bit of lateral thinking the NZRU could be enhancing the value of the ABs, rather than milking them. He caught himself referring to the All Blacks as a business twice, which really rankled with me. The man has no vision at all

  • Field Theory: Just one point in it,

    This piece is just silly

Nah that's a piece of biting satire on the state of NZ rugby journalism isn't it?

    Isn't it?

  • Island Life: I am curious. Yellow?,

Frustratingly it's not that there aren't people with vision involved with the council. Here's an example, not that it'll ever get built...

  • Field Theory: An odd morning,

But on the matter at hand, Barca were far and away the better team this morning. Let's not forget they did the Spanish League, Spanish Cup & European Cup treble this season.

  • Field Theory: An odd morning,

Everything about the current success at Manchester United is down to Ferguson and the support he gets from the Board. The huge budget, the visceral hatred, are all products of the success he brought the club.

If he hadn't won the FA Cup in 1989 he probably would have been sacked, and everything has grown from there.

IMHO he has already earned his place slongside Busby and Shankly as the great managers in English football (all three are Scotsmen, note) even if it takes a few years to acknowledge that.

I've got no reason to love him, seeing as his Aberdeen side knocked ipswich out of the UEFA Cup in 1982, sparking a twenty-five year spiral into mediocrity (Bring back Lord Bobby Robson I say) but the man has earned a right to say what he likes about football.

  • Island Life: Don't need no steenkin' lockup,

    Hi Rich.

This from the Herald 28 July:

Lots of interest but low uptake for KiwiSaver

Providers blame slow start on apathy and uncertainty about future of scheme if National Party wins general election

Uncertainty, confusion and just plain apathy are being blamed for an apparently slower than expected uptake of the new retirement saving scheme, KiwiSaver.

A Weekend Herald survey of 17 KiwiSaver providers four weeks after the scheme started on July 1 has found that they have been swamped with inquiries, but the numbers actually signing up are being counted only in the hundreds and thousands out of an eligible workforce of two million.

  • Field Theory: The Super 135,

Not quite sure why we swallowed that one.

I'm struggling to understand how the NZRU swallowed any of it. Had they already decided that the Air NZ Cup was a gonner? I understood the S14 struggled to make any money (as does the NPC) but by focusing on (what I assume is the big earner) All Black tests, they have cut the game off at the knees.

NZ's heroic ability to replace seemingly irreplaceable players in the past (Michael Jones past it? Here's Josh Kronfeld) will wither & die if we reduce the opportunities for players to play top level rugby (witness our problems with providing real career opportunities for coaches already)

  • Field Theory: The Super 135,

The new Super deal is astoundingly bad. Does SANZAR/NZRU perform any market research or do they just ask the person at the next desk for their opinion?

Pigs are more intelligent than dogs

NEIL: Well, I don't mind being a pig, cause, for your information, pigs are really intelligent, actually.

    RICK: Oh?

    NEIL: Yeah, like dolphins.

RICK: Oh, so they are, are they? Well, tell me, Neil. Who invented the internal combustion engine? Was it Porky the Pig? No, it was Lincoln Rawls, wasn't it?! And the Theory of Relativity. Was Pythagoras a pig? No, he was a Greek, wasn't he? So tell me, Neil. You're the expert. [grabs the cups] What's the major piggie contribution to civilization?

    NEIL: Ummm.... [pause, thinking]

RICK: It's bacon, isn't it? Bacon and rooling around in the mud. Look out, Michaelangelo, here comes the new piggie Renaissance!

and apropos of nothing in particular:

What do you think you're doing, Pig?
Do you really give a fig, Pig?
And what's your favourite type of gig, Pig?
    Barry Manilow?
Or the Black and White Minstrel Show?
