  • Field Theory: The Canterbury Tapes,

Has there ever been a worse strip, in any sport, than what the North Queensland Fury turned up in over the weekend?

Norwich City have their work cut out for them in making a strip look good, but the 1992 was a doozy. mind you, there's a lot of competition.

BTW, the Herld reprinted this from the Observer this morning, which is an interesting take on the business of football.

Virgin Money's Football Fans' Inflation Index indicates that, this season, prices for diligently following a team have risen 15.1 per cent year-on-year.

  • Hard News: New Zealand Weekend Television,

I can actually recall the very first New Zealand Telethon,

Was that the one that Split Enz played on? I've looked (not especially hard) for that clip (playing Maybe I think), but never found it. I don't suppose anybody else has? I'd love to see it...

  • Speaker: Remembering the Chartists,

Damned if you do, damned if you don't, damned no matter what you do. :)

I imagine R&D tax incentives into time travel just moved a notch up the priority list :)

  • Speaker: Remembering the Chartists,

Maybe he'll be more graceful about it than Hazel Blears

Either way it's not a good look.

  • Field Theory: Interesting conversations,

I've defended the AB coaches here this season, and still disagree with the "anyone but Henry" crowd, but after watching the buffonery on show by the ABs in Durban, I'm starting to wonder...

The All Blacks are facing a crisis, playing just about the stupidest rugby imaginable,

This is just unforgiveable, and looks to be the enduring legacy of Henry et al. Whereas I used to sneer at my Saffa mates and tell them their team was good, but dumb as paint, now that is the defining feature of our side, so I keep schtumm.

Honestly, what is the problem, here? there are still some great players out there, coaches don't get bad overnight (or over the summer). Are we really missing Carter, Hayman, Jack and Williams that much?

And to steal a concept from CiF, I dond Tom's points about the NPC, the mighty (Hawkes) Bay were superb at the weekend, almost enough to make me not care about the ABs result (actually I don't care about the result - the bloated 3N means you can afford two losses on the road, it's the nature of the performance that I care about).

  • Hard News: On the Box,

some Freeview HD boxes are already available at <$200, which is pretty appealing.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but if I buy a freeview box will it fix my rotten TV reception?

  • Field Theory: Professionalism is killing…,

See Im not sure that sport somehow didn't just hitch itself to this wagon called "The Higher Aspirations of the Human Animal" that was sitting idle at the roadside, where it has been left by some other fading organisation sometime early last century.

I wonder if this fading organisation is the army or British Colonialism. While sports has been professional in many forms for centuries, its rise to being one of our forms of mass entertainment (at least in the British tradition into which we have fallen) is a post-WW2 phenomenon. As an example, English footballers had a maximum wage until the early 60s. (sorry, can't embed this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Haynes#First_.C2.A3100-per-week_Player)

We've replaced war with a sport as a way for young men (cos it's always been about men) to prove themslves under pressure. Whereas we used to lionize millitary leaders we now worship pop stars and pop sportsmen.

Is there not one single thing I can buy at the local supermarket which doesn't exploit someone vulnerable or deforest something or exterminate an endangered species?
