  • Up Front: One,

Thanks for the continuing updates. I'm struggling to find the right way to engage in this conversation from outside, without the benefit of being there. I was due to get on a plane to a conference on the day of the quake last September, but it was cancelled that day. A couple of my colleagues were already there, and we had some interesting phone calls.

Apart from that, it seems that we really do need to get our arses down there to appreciate the extent of what you have all been through, and are going through.

On a positive note, I was alerted to the fact that the Australian Accommodation Industry raised $60,000 NZD for Christchurch last week at there awards ceremony. That seemed kind of nice.

    Flourishing Cafe in Avondale.

Thanks for the tip. Foodie blog? We're so nearly there, without even trying. Just sayin'.

    Yep.

Nice photos. Talk about 'salivational'. I would be eating almost continuously if I lived there.

You should try and get back there for the annual silent film festival (silent but for the piano and audience laughter) .

Thanks Geoff. It sounds like it would be worth a trip. Although I'd have to learn to ride a horse.

    * but I do include some history, such as the De Luxe in Opotiki celebrating its 85 year of operation.

That was my childhood cinema, and where I saw my first motion picture. I would dearly love to see/read whatever it is you produce from this exercise. Did you have a look in Shalfoon & Francis Grocery Store Museum? Visited on a recent return, and it was like being 5 again, wandering around admiring all the boxes.

  • Hard News: Just don't call it "Party Central",

Half the city apparently descended on Wynyard Quarter yesterday and the wobbly hospitality strip predictably didn't cope.

Four of us ventured in on scooters, and somehow got a table outside Jack Tar. The drinks took a while, but only because someone stole ours, and I would have to say the young Irish women who looked after us while we were there deserved every bit of the tip we gave her when we left.

One question though? Why the hell would you drive your car right up to the wharf hoping to score a park? It was gridlock, but that was because 'we' can't walk more than 100m without thinking our birthright for a convenient car park right outside the venue has somehow been curtailed.

The motorcycle park outside SeaMart was conveniently located though. Not being a great walker myself.

I was too young to punk, but never too young to disco. Donna Summer certainly helped. There was plenty of teenage angsty anarchy around, but my preference from this era was English Ska, The Jam and a couple of bands from Manchester you might have heard of.

One of my first concerts was The Newmatics in coastal New Zealand. An underage rage, if I recall. Not very punk, but great energy in both band and crowd.

Thanks for coming by and making yourself known, Louise. I’ll certainly check you guys out at some point.

+1. We'll be along presently. If not today, then before next Friday, when, if you really do have good service, we won't be able to get near the place.

I absolutely support honest, no holds bared reviewing to keep us all on our toes, but please don't make blanket assumptions that your experience at one or two is going to be indicative of the whole.

I'd like to give your establishment a try too. As mentioned, the Gelato was good, and I've been to the pub, which had someone playing Karaoke style Violent Femmes, which wasn't. Guess I'll have to keep trying them one by one until I find one with excellent service and a smiling manager called Louise. You're not the one with the colourful piano which my kids played on during opening weekend by any chance?

I hope you do well, and that your approach rubs off on the others around you. We are a pretty critical bunch, to be sure.

Thanks, although I found it here earlier, with facts, no less!

The single was split into 2 parts to fit on the 45. You had to flip the record to hear the whole song.

    That would show... dedication?
