Re the 9-day fortnight - after reading this article, I'm not sure our employment legislation allows for it to be imposed?
That article outlines how HP has ordered 5% pay cuts globally - but in NZ, it's for the employee to accept that. And you can't tell them that they, personally, are more likely to be made redundant if they don't - i.e., employees have to decide that by taking a pay cut they are lessening the chances of redundancy OVERALL across the organisation, and therefore possibly reducing the chance of themselves.
So my read of that is that the Govt and employers couldn't force a 5%/1-day cut because that would be contrary to your contract and you'd have to give consent. So this could only be made available as an option for employees...

9-day fortnight WITHOUT Govt compensation must be the Finance Minister's dream!
Option A: 10 staff, make one redundant - that one has to be paid welfare
Option B: 10 staff, all take a 10% pay cut - sweet! No need for Gummint to pay out and largely similar tax take. Hizzah! They will have to compensate at least to the level of welfare - i.e. each of those 10 staff get 1/10th of the dole for that 10th day.

Excellent response Rod, thanks very much. This struck me in particular:
As well as a great product you need a big investment in back office processes. The server needs to runs the business so you can be a low cost operator
So you need to invest in the systems that run the business, alongside investing in the system that IS the business. I guess having a "business management" tool like Xero as your product helps in that regard! For example I've had an idea floating around, it would be part-targeted at the Enterprise level (two segments off the same platform) which, you're right, would help ramp the revenue earlier on. But raising the capital to fund a business that's all cost up front seems even more daunting/unlikely in this environment. That lovely cash-stream-off-low-marginal-investment of the long-term is not on most financiers mind at the moment I would guess.

Rod, the SAAS model you've started up with is about the worst business model for cashflow in it's opening years, by design - do you think the capital requirements to cash fund such a business model through it's opening years make starting one impossible in the short-term economic environment?

Interesting, thanks Emma.
The Sign production sounds excellent - exactly the sort of thing I'd like to take my son along to once he's older to show him how different people communicate.

men's jobs in some areas will go, as public service managers are asked to account for every penny.
My thought on seeing the "we can't afford wimmins" comment from Ryall was "it seems you can't afford men actually".
Fire all the blokes, replace them with women and blam. There's your 10% budget cut. -
There was a point at which the doctor's voice receded, becoming inaudible under a white sea of shock. He was telling us quite important things, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't hear a word he said.
Maternal empathy perhaps.
A lovely story (not the right word at all) as always - can I ask how "impaired" (seriously, I have no grasp of appropriate words today) her hearing is once it's enhanced with hearing aids? Obviously still a fair way down given she needs an FM system and NZSL figures so prominently?

But Kyle the prisoners themselves HATE parole because then they miss out on the central-heating and TV-of-cutting-edge-display-technology.

Awfully jealous - spent many a glorious month on the Amalfi Coast in 2005.e
Can I recommend La Tagliata in Montepertuso (above Positano, another brilliant road for your signature experiences) for their "Dinosaura" - the most incredible slab of meat fresh from the animals roaming the steep terraces outside.I would recommend jumping on "il Pesce Rosso" - the little Red Fish boat - from the wharf at Positano to be dropped off at Da Adolfo, a real "la dolce vita" tiny restaurant and beach where you can have unbelievable mozzarella alla griglia sulla foglia di limone (mozzarella grilled on lemon leaves), but February is probably not the best time for that!

Indeed. I do like to think I'm a reasonable sort of pig-fucker.
The man has a way with words.
And with pigs apparently.
