"the victim" includes society as well. Hence police investigating in the absence of complaint. Discussed earlier in thread, including historical references.

ok, so how should he have handled the situation. nobody really answered the question of what they thought he should have done.

what you would have done if you were involved in a situation where you'd done something incredibly stupid, possibly out of character, possibly not, and the person you did it to for what ever reasons agreed to not put it to the police. what should he have done? i'm not siding with him, i'm just wondering how you think he should have acted post grossly stupid action.

It is? I would have thought that our "society" (y'know, communities, politicians, police, courts, schools etc) are doing lots to try and reduce violent reactions to stressful situations.

the whole front section of any news paper will contradict that unfortunately, and most of mans short an illustrious history on this planet. there's been some good bits for sure, but lets not forget the continuous states of war, greed, general evil etc.

Now our obsession with rugby undermines all that but still....

    pigskin ball,....testosterone, shake vigorously
    I don't get it either,

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

Please don't say it was the victim's fault for not reporting it. I don't buy that

that's an interesting point. what is the protocol for a crime where your victim decides not to press charges or report it to the authorities?

how should he have handled this in your esteemed opinions. you'll probably need to give to versions of it though,

one being him and his ex decided to not take it to court and mutually agreed to deal with it outside of the system.

two being he paid her to shut up.

actually there's probably a third or 4th scenario in there some where too.

  • Hard News: Another nail in the coffin of…,

Of course the improvement in technology was a major reason for CDs. And of course it was pushed by tech companies, the Sonys and Philips, who were dead keen to sell us another hi-fi system- yeah, better in some ways, but very pricey in 1982.
The majors were not keen, in part because it involved a digital copy of the original which could be copied, bit for bit, by the nefarious. The fact that they could re-sell their back issue was a big factor in getting them to look past this.

which begs the question. what option did the majors really have on moving to a new format. it seems to read to me that the new digital format was coming whether they liked it or not and it made them feel better about it when someone said you can sell some people an updated version of the same music they already own.
its kind of a chicken and egg situation. Simon you're saying it was egg first in that majors decided to go for cds cos they got to sell the same product twice over to the same people, I'm saying it's just as likely that it was chicken first in that the new format was coming and majors consoled themselves that there was an additional benefit in a new format in that some people would re buy a product in a new format.

Why does it matter which way it was? cos one implies negative motivations and perpetuates malice toward the industry and the other implies a lot less scheming, and hence less negative vibes.

my question then is how would you see the format situation play out if majors decided they didn't want to get behind cds? did they really have a choice?

Perhaps you can offer us a nice, even-handed way of describing someone kicking the shit out of a prone person until the bones in their spinal column shatter?

where'd you read the details about him "kicking the shit out of her till her spine '__shattered__' "

That's the third different description of her injuries I've heard, from non official sources.

the wealthy could simply pay for criminal acts and walk away with no record

seems to be a lot of that going on at high levels,

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

So saying "we don't know what happened" just doesn't wash.

depends who you mean by 'we'.
I from the media coverage I've seen don't really have a clear picture of what went on on the night, who veitch is apart from "the guy who talks while I read a magazine for 20 minutes during the evening news".

if by 'we' you mean 'you', ie part of the media privy to extra info which you can't print then that's a different story.

I was commenting on 'we' the ignorant masses, including myself in that group. some of 'we' may know more, most don't.

C'mon Rob, hit me with something that might conceivably be a viable other side of the story.

you want me to hijack the thread? um, DRM, NZ on air....

fucked if I know, mental illness, alien abduction, he lives next to a meridian substation that causes violent outbursts, he's got multiple personalities and one of those personalities is actually a woman who was the one that did the attack, on of danielle's stories-something to do with blood family picnics and postcards? probably the first one.

violence in our society is absolutely disheartening, I hate that we read about it so much(most of the front section of a newspaper is about it), that it happens so much, but unfortunately for us as a species we've got a long long history of this shit, and ostracizing the offenders ignores that it is a part of "our" make up, (our past and hopefully not our future). I don't know why this guy did what he did, he seems to be well liked outside of this instance, it doesn't really make sense to me, I see it with sadness rather than anger. That said, if it was my sister who got her back broken I'd probably react a lot more heatedly.

I've read of some maori dealing with individual acts of violence by treating it as a community problem, and not just the problem of the person who did it. I guess cos they see the offender in their entirety, not just in light of the event.

And one good stomp to someone's back could break it in 4 places, but then so could multiple boots. a doctors report which we haven't seen yet would put more light on the nature of his actions, ie sustained violence, single out burst with devastating results,

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

since no one here appears to be doing what you say they're doing, robbery

It wasn't just me, I noted it in support of a comment by sue, and ian put it more strongly, plus comments from a couple of others.
The first page of this thread had a good swag of anger attached, "nasty piece of work" etc, and he may well be, but none of us would know that for sure yet would we. We've just got media coverage and conjecture on a partial story. I hoped we'd be above that, but didn't really believe we would be.
For me this story reads as very very sad, something bad has gone on for all parties involved.

noted on the underwear too, I shall try to give you openings in future to show you're knowledge on the history and development of "the clothing we shall not mention"

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

is there any difference at all between the historic & current ussage of the term "lynch mob"?

similar but without the racial and family picnic overtones probably, and the gory details of castration and tongue removal (which I have noticed danielle has slipped into conversation before hand), and possibly without the actual hanging, so yeah, quite a bit of difference

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

    gay old time

    You mean like this?

who know's what the hollywood theme tune writer had in his head when he constructed that tune,
who know's why Veitch an apparently sane man in an extremely high profile position thought it would be a good idea to cripple his girlfriend,
what stable, calm and reasonable person does that?
Seeing as how Veitch doesn't have a history of thug behaviour (ie not from the streets, didn't hang with a gang, parents weren't in prision, doesn't have a criminal record for violent burglary (that we know of)) I'm going to have to guess it was something to do with mental illness, temporary or something deeper, and last I checked the general consensus on the liberal boards like this one was we were attempting to be understanding of such conditions and look to cure rather than punish. That and sympathy and support for the victim of the assault of course.
otherwise we're all just redneck no brains swayed by the slightest wiff of scandal.
It's shocking yes, but really the most shocking thing is this guy is a public figure and we're all being pulled into a mob mentality because the media decides to jump on it, and all before we have clear and verified information on what the hell actually happened.
