  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to SamC,

    Pretty much.

One would start by cracking his CMS password, etc. Look for any social networking API links with tokens. If there's a webmail server running, then trap passwords on that. Some people use VPNs to access their web servers - that's a vector, especially if you can hijack DNS that way and hence grab POP/IMAP access. If he's using ssh, turn off autologin and have it ask for a password. Or try and get X forwarding to happen.

Minutes of endless fun. All hypothetical, of course.

  • Hard News: Not doing justice, in reply to Tinakori,

Possibly. Although if this guy's typical of local rightwingers, it might be a more general political opposition.

    a Communist League candidate

Was the vote split due to better resourced Communist Union and Communist Soccer candidates standing?

  • Hard News: Not doing justice, in reply to Pete George,

I'm not a supporter at all of Dunne or his party

Rather than boring us all with your increasingly pathetic attempts to smear IMP, why not regale us with the story of your split from Disunited Past?

  • Hard News: Media Take and Godwin's Election,

There are rules around broadcast media during the campaign period and they're being applied

Basically, Radio Live and Newstalk ZB are allowed to run 24/7 right-wingery, so long as they don't actually use the words "Vote National". Fox News is allowed to broadcast "fair and balanced" content on Sky Channel 88 - I guess they won't use the words "New Zealand" from one week to the next.

But play a song critical of our beloved leader, and they're after your licence.

I'm seriously thinking about hiding an FM transmitter with a car battery in a building or park somewhere, tuning it to a free guardband frequency and broadcasting the John Key song on an endless loop until the electoral commission track it down.

  • Hard News: Not doing justice,

It's not possible for Labour to not stand someone in any electorate

I'm kinda hoping the Labour (and Green) candidates in Epsom will have their nominations withdrawn at the last minute. Or change their names by deed poll to: Party Vote Labour But Vote For Paul Goldsmith

Overseas, running for an unwinnable seat is regarded as training for aspiring candidates, and you're usually expected to do it at least once before getting an chance at actually being elected. You don't get shoved in one forever just because you're from the place.

  • Hard News: Not doing justice,

Seems to be a difficult area, the Greens aren't running a candidate there.

If I was organising a political party, I'd obtain an app that required all social networking interactions to be moderated by someone sensible before they go out and ban any direct access to Twitter/Facebook/comments.

But I'd also make all MPs cut up their parliamentary services credit cards and file expense claims for reimbursement only after they'd been checked by somebody in party HQ.

  • Hard News: The silence of the public square, in reply to Sacha,

I think if you are going to have a candidates debate, it should be for candidates, not just candidates who aren't barking mad.

everything to do with rhythm and scan

I believe the correct chant is:

    Fuck John Key.
    Rather you than me!

  • Hard News: The silence of the public square,

I think it's pretty relevant who happens to be running a line, especially when it's a standard technique of the NZ right to try a chameleon trick: one year, they're a candidate for a party, the next they're an "independent" local body candidate and next minute, they try to recycle themselves as an "impartial commentator".
