  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit, in reply to Joe Wylie,

the breach in the barrier of genteel smugness

    Oh, *that* explains the flooding.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit, in reply to Jacqui Dunn,

I'm just being silly. Sorry, tone is difficult...

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit, in reply to Jacqui Dunn,

Yes. Actually, I should stop whining, because I volunteered to be the one to stay at home. It's just that on the actual day it suddenly became a bit harder than I thought it would be.

(The Languishing Lactator is also my stage name, strange to say. ;) )

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

I am not at the BDO either, and decided ruefully this afternoon that marrying someone with hugely similar interests to me, but with no mirror ability to breastfeed our offspring, was actually a totally stupid fucking idea. I wish I'd thought of this in Las Vegas in 2001. Mutter grumble rhubarb.

  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Craig, I get what you’re saying in the abstract and might even agree with it, but then you get down to specifics and it’s all over for me. Once someone tells the story of that person that they loved and who is gone, I don’t ever want death to happen! So my ‘people who are allowed to die’ list is vanishingly small. It’s, like, Hitler and Stalin and Michael Vick.

  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief,

<frantically wiping away tears> Look, can the human race find a cure for death already? I'm beginning to get quite exasperated about this issue.

  • Hard News: Floating the idea, in reply to Paul Williams,

I’d happily escape from Sydney to Mairangi Bay… or is there something I’m missing from my quick visits?

The beach is quite sweet. It's the... culture of that particular part of the Shore I don't really care for. (East Coast Bays is a very safe seat for National.)

    midazolam

My doctor gives me that for my fear of flying. It is awesome.

Dyan? That was one of your “no shit, sherlock” moments, love!

Were you aware, Jackie, that Sherlock Holmes was secretly Canadian? ;)

  • Hard News: Floating the idea,

someone who can technically swim, but is not really safe in the ocean

That is a perfect description of me. It’s also why I’ve started our little dude on swimming lessons already. (‘Swimming lessons’ currently means ‘holding the baby in the pool and singing nursery rhymes, with occasional judicious head-dunking’, but it apparently gets more complicated as you go on.) Then again, I had a school pool AND lots of extra private swimming lessons as a child (privilege!) because my mother was quite concerned about how bad I was, but I still never ‘got it’ properly. I’m not sure why not.

No one could accuse me of having no respect for the ocean, at least! I spend a lot of time at the west coast beaches looking twitchily at little kids on boogie boards as they zoom athletically past me…

ETA: Also! Did anyone link to this? Drownings per capita. What's up with Latvia?

  • Hard News: Floating the idea, in reply to Pat Hackett,

I live at neither the "Avondale end" nor the "Westgate end" of west Auckland. I live, in fact, on the road to Piha. :) (I did grow up in Mairangi Bay, incidentally, but escaped.)

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit, in reply to Steve Parks,

I find the reaction by some to Kyle’s original point oversensitive

    Erm, yes.
