I wish it had a thingy for getting the stones out of horses hooves... just in case
When my wife mocks me for carrying my multitools (plural) around with me, I always tell her that you never know when you're going to run across some poor horse with a stone in it's hoof. It would be a shame to miss the opportunity to earn the undying gratitude of the equine world. A bit like Androcoles and his lion.

Speaker: TPPA: It's Extreme, in reply to
The patent system is generally OK, although the proposed changes are, as Scott says, concerning.
I agree with you that copyright is a shambles, and I'm also reasonably happy with the geographic protection of product descriptors, for the reasons you've outlined (although cheddar, parmesan and stilton are pretty darn generic. Are they on the list?)

If you are referring to the wildflower strips all along the southern part of the motorway just before the Bombay Hills then I'm afraid you are incorrect. This land is NZTA land, and even there, Mayor Banks had no control. I understand that the wildflowers were replaced due to maintenance problems.
As a sometime motorcyclist, I'm rather partial to shrubbery over wildflowers where those wire barrier cheesecutters have been installed.
In the event of a crash, the shrubbery might have a better chance than the pretty flowers do of absorbing some of my impact energy before the wire gets to slice off one of my limbs or decapitate me.

If you've been hit by an earthquake and you're near the coast, you should just assume a tsunami is a high chance.
Yes, although I was thinking more of the situation where there is an earthquake elsewhere on the Pacific rim which wouldn't necessarily be felt in NZ, but which presents a potential Tsunami danger several hours later.
Weekends for my immediate family tend to be 48 hours of disconnection from sources of instant news such as TV, internet, etc. Works as a decompression mechanism for us.
I did get a text alert at 7.00am on a Saturday morning for the (I think) Chile earthquake a few months back, and spent the rest of the day listening to NatRad for updates - I wouldn't necessarily have done that in the normal course of events, and would have remained blissfully ignorant until the house floated away.
So the text was very useful and welcome.

Pffft. Leatherman, Gerber. Keep yer johnny-come-lately multitools. Real men* use a Schrade.
I'm now considering getting a Gerber strapcutter, though. You never know when you'll be hanging upside-down in a sinking crashed helicopter. It could save your life!
*for which read: multitool hipsters. Oh, it's a fairly obscure multitool, you've probably never heard of it. They don't manufacture it any more, so it's hard to get hold of. But all the true professionals agree it has the best pliers.

It was the x-ray specs that did it for me. Not actually being able to see through girl's clothing was extremely disappointing.

Talking of texts, I'm going to cross-post this here for maximum viewage, as I think it's important: I didn't get a tsunami warning text on Fri/Sat despite supposedly being signed up to the council's text alert system. A friend who is signed up to the civil defence text alert system did get one (so they did get circulated).
It's possibly an unintended side-effect of the amalgamation of all the separate councils into the supercity - I was previously signed up under North Shore Council's system, to the best of my memory. This doesn't seem to have automatically transferred to a pan-Auckland system.
I went looking on both the Auckland region Civil Defence website, and the Council website, with no joy. There's no explanation. Neither is there a sign-up instruction page.
I finally managed to find a sign-up for the Auckland region by googling, and going through Northland Civil Defence. The website is here.
Frankly, unless I've missed something obvious (and I'm happy to be corrected by any of our resident CD experts), then that counts as a big fat fail on several counts. I've sent Auckland CD an e-mail asking for an explanation, but no reply as yet.

and yet we're talking about it seriously rather than the rebuilding of Christchurch..
Ok, I'd like to talk about the rather disturbing but persistent rumours of heavy-handed 'salvage' operations in ChCh. Anyone got anything?

Re: SST
When you're losing sales to a competitor you know what always works? Copying the competitor.
It's like all those iPod knock-offs, they've done so well. Or that singer who's a lot like Lady Gaga. Or that movie that was like Twilight. It's surely just an aberration that CNN continues to lose viewers to FOX News, despite increasingly copying FOX's style.
History really respects those who were there second, who refused to forge their own path, to take risks, to try something new. Good on ya, Sunday Star-Times.
Android phones? :)
Good post, but.
