Hard News: Nobody wanted #EQNZ for Christmas, in reply to
The need at the council is for inclusive decision-making, and competence, not ideological hair-splitting surely?
Yes, mostly. But good to know someone in council is looking out for the less-than-well-off. (Councillors get about $85k a year; most are not fulltime, though that'd be a pretty good job.) And if there’s a decision to, eg suddenly sell the airport, or push for market rents on council-owned flats, I’d like to know which side someone I’m voting for will fall.

Find out whether local government candidates are Tories (they lie about this too,
It's incredibly annoying (and somewhat dishonest) the way local body politicians hide their affiliations/political inclinations. I voted for Reid once, before I worked it out... And when Parker was first making his run, and touting amalgamation of BP with the city, it was (and still is) totally unclear where his political inclinations were.
Often it doesn't matter- but gosh, sometimes it does.
(and yeah- Corbett is far right; Wells and Reid I'd say centre-right in a Nat sort of way) -

do you know the name of the pointy hill under the purple Pooh’s feet?
Growing up in Diamond Harbour, we always called it ‘the Monument’ or sometimes ‘the pinnacle’. I gather from ‘Place-names of Banks Peninsula’ the 19th C pakeha called it Rhodes Monument, or Rhodes Sugarloaf (members of the Rhodes family farmed the Purau area).
It has a Māori name, but I can’t seem to find it at the moment.
Another angle on it :) -

Yeah- it's unravelling fast now. Wish I could be at the Feb 1 rally, but am tied up at work. Not sure Parker would lose an election, but I think there are a few councillors who'd get a surprise.

Hard News: The Mega Conspiracy, in reply to
The amount of information detailed in the indictment speaks to a considerable period of surveillance and preparation, which the authorities say was 2 years. Like the SOPA/PIPA protests, I’d guess that this was coincidental and not linked to the raid.
Probably right. I'm not inclined to see conspiracy, though it's good fodder for those who are. Still, interesting to see what mr.com was up to. Big plans, stacks of cash.

Anyone else hearing rumours relating this to the launch of Megabox?
Teh interwebs is alive with speculation on the subject… (megabox.com seems to have vanished) -

The content is first and foremost licensed for broadcast, internet rights are secondary to that (and usually bundled).
Youtube/Google are putting a few bucks in too. Worth a read, if this is an area that interests you.
Some of the channels here and another view here
It could turn to dust fairly fast, but I dunno- could work. I watch a fair bit of youtube these days- but nothing like as much as my kids. -
TV channels are the source of this content the model isn’t going to change drastically
Mostly with you. Dylan, but it already has changed a great deal. And we'll see more change. NZ more-or-less missed the cable boom, but that fragmented markets in the US and Europe.
Lots of 'shopping channels'... but also HBO making direct to cable shows- including some of the best TV drama ever produced- that have never been broadcast free-to-air in the US. -
YouTube has signed revenue-share agreements with several rights agencies and has begun to commission TV works, but there’s just not enough revenue.
Here's more on where that may be heading :)
