I'd bet TVNZ 7's numbers are rising, too. Until we got a freeview TV (fairly recently) we didn't watch it much; now it's the default channel (we did have a freeview box, for a while- it never found favour!)
As we move towards analogue shut-down, there will be large-scale movement to freeview of those who don't want to pay Sky for their tv and who haven't bought a new set in the last couple of years (probably poorer and older demographics). I reckon many would turn into loyal TVNZ 7 viewers- (good programmes! no ads! News in a decent timeslot!) if they were to get the chance. Many would probably have loved TVNZ 6 too... -

There have been so few opportunities to forget the distress and tragedy of our ongoing situation
Yes! Turned off the radio at about 7.10 today. Plenty to be getting on with. Not my time for looking back. I quite understand people do want to spend those moments together, though. At the university, a big crowd gathered for the memorial ceremony. Ok, lectures were stopped, and it was the only show on campus. But still: there's a place for public ceremony. We don't do it brilliantly in NZ, maybe, but still.
And this.Today, we’ll all find our own paths. The only wrong attitude is not to understand that.

If noone else has posted it: there's a 'change.org' petition here you can sign (easy if you are already registered:)) asking that live closed captioning be provided immediately.

It seems hard to find a good coppicing tree that is also not considered an invasive tree weed!
Dealbata certainly can be! A small well-managed plot is one thing, but let them get away... Eucalypts are good growers, though not so good for the soil. They can get scary big if you leave them a little long, though :)

shelterbelt info
Depends what you want it for- long-term enhancement; a variety of natives.
Short-term shelter: tagasasate/tree lucerne is hard to beat. It's surprisingly good firewood (and stock feed), very high calorific value wood, but hard; nitrogen fixing, fast growing, wood pigeons love it. For firewood, acacia dealbata is fast, coppices well, and easy splitting when it gets big. Some of the eucalypts grow like grey-green rockets- not so sure how they coppice, but they are popular, and high calorific value firewood too. (I did a polytech course on this once- wish I had the notes:) -
Great update, and heartening news. And bless that Dalziel and his hammer.

Hard News: Nobody wanted #EQNZ for Christmas, in reply to
I think March 22 or thereabouts was a big memorial Hagley park to mark one month on. Some folks found it useful; some didn’t. We enjoyed the day on the water.
Investors eyeing up those tasty Council assets.
Brownlee must think we are idiots. He’s not pressuring CCC to sell anything- that’s for CCC to decide. Just that CCC’s plan had to be “a lot better than `we’re just going to put up the rates and we’re going to borrow a lot more money’”. He says- find a billion dollars, fast. We're not helping- we've done enough. Forget about raising rates or borrowing it. Forget I’m a senior minister in a govt that believes in selling off profitable publicly owned assets. No, this isn't a gun at your head. It’s ahm, your choice.
Christchurch has done well in retaining core assets, compared with Auckland and Wellington- port, airport, power company. Now the ‘investors’ (read: wealthy who see a chance to get wealthier) are licking their lips?
Disaster capitalism at its most naked and unashamed. “Loot” a light-bulb fitting, and you end up in jail for days and weeks. Loot a power company or two, and you’ll probably get a knighthood. -

I think I’m with most of you regarding the public commemorations. Took the family sailing for the March 22nd one, and had a lovely day. It’s does need some public marking. But not a clown-show; if we had a leader with mana I might even want to attend.
Yeah, we’re somewhere muddling about in the middle of a long messy business. And maybe the mood has turned, from the thankful-to-authority post-traumatic reaction to distemper and unease. I gather the DHB is preparing for a tough winter.
22nd will be just another day at work for most of us, I think.
And I don’t really watch TV, so I guess I’ll have to order a DVD of “When a City Falls”. Available on the 23rd, I gather!
{eta- oops- meant to reply to Hebe :) be good to meet some chch pas folks one day} -
Working :) But working at a memorial service. Does that count as attending?

Minor diversion: “When A City Falls” screening on TV3 7:30 Feb 22nd. If you missed it at the movies….
