The guardian article linked to this rather glorious tribute to the BBC:
Gotta stir the heart, that long lineage of talent. -
They're called 'whips' for a reason, eh? Sort of sad, I guess. Nick Smith sometimes has that 'I was bullied at boys' school' look.

Hard News: Nobody wanted #EQNZ for Christmas, in reply to
Me neither, though he answered his emails.
Nor me, not the inspirational figure we'd all like to see. But Moore was a decent fellow. I watched a few times him do his 'Friday in the square' thing- where he was just available to talk to anyone who showed up, and did. Sometimes no-one there, and he'd stare at the seagulls. Or a slightly loopy person would turn up, and he'd listen, far more patiently than I could have managed.

Lots of ways up the mountain- the shortest/easiest is the Purau saddle under ‘The Monument’, steep first 40 minutes, about 4 hours return. Aged 15, two mates and I pushed our bikes up that track in the snow, so we could ride down to Diamond Harbour (another route up). Fun but silly. Worth remembering how the weather can change, though- even in summer.
Other routes include the Port Levy Saddle (probably my favourite- amazing old totara skeletons), Bradley’s Estate in Charteris Bay (bloody steep!), via Gebbies Pass and the Packhorse hut, and Kaituna Valley (never done this one- looks lovely, more bush on the southern side.) If you have a willing driver, you can go up and come down in very different spots. You’d want a whole day I think.
The summit is a wonderful top-of-the-world feeling, for sure- well worth it :)
(The feel of it has been altered by the presence of cellphone towers, now- great reception, though!) -

she bore a grudge against “that horrible Grizz Wyllie and his boozy mates” who’d emerged from their watering hole to abuse the passing marchers.
I remember that so clearly, Grizz and pals coming out of the Carlton as we marched down Papanui Rd; standing there jug in hand, red-faced bellowing. That was in April or May, well before the tour started.

Rod Oram says in today’s SST
This might be the same article? The Press is (half?) gunning for Parker, it looks like.
Not sure I’ve ever seen an article quite that blatant- (and the headline, “Bringing down powers that be”) run as news rather than opinion! -
