  • Busytown: Reading Room,

I don't think I'd assume it says that much about who they are

Since we converted every CD in the house to incorporeal files and biffed them in the garden shed, people might possibly assume from a brief glance around our house that we don't like music. Which would be laughably inaccurate.

On the other hand, they might assume from our bookshelves that we are extremely clever readers of scholarly non-fiction and the classics, when it must be admitted that on my part, at least, I just have leftover historical works from my previous life as a grad student, I keep re-reading Jane Austen, and I never bloody get past chapter three of any Dickens.

It's difficult, this 'expression of your true self through possessions' malarkey.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich

I am *so glad* that someone else besides me uses this band as a punchline. :)

  • Hard News: Kids: Still alright,

I think it is truly soul-destroying that custard squares are on the seemingly endless list of things not supposed to be consumed by pregnant women. (I seriously considered having a first post-natal meal of Bluff oysters and a custard square.)

Nope! However, she and I both enjoy the music of Justin Timberlake, so that's something.

Shame he was over-taxed into assaulting that Tongan psychiatrist!

That's "*top* Tongan psychiatrist" to you.

  • Hard News: The best blogger there never was,

"He was fined $10 for that incident, in which he had his jaw broken in two places after being hit from behind by a top psychiatrist."

I can't look at that crazily constructed sentence without laughing. Tears of mirth are actually coursing down my cheeks.

My MA supervisor always said that you'd better actively love the topic you write your thesis on. Even then, by the end of the degree you'll be so sick of that topic and all its associated writings that it will take you months or years to remember why you liked it in the first place. It's not the fault of scholarship: it's just a function of concentrating on one tiny thing for so long.

I just didn't like seeing my friends scrimmaging around snatching things off the floor is all.

Remind me not to invite you to the next PAS lolly scramble.

I'm not the only one who'd like to see the Bush

What a fortuitous line break! ;) But, yeah, that was the weird thing. For the first few weeks it was all 'hey, he's not doing what I expect at all' and then the whole thing gradually became *exactly* what I expected. Blurgh.
