Thank you. I really appreciate your giving me this opportunity to read, and better understand, your view of the world.

And another totally unheralded New Zealand team that is World Championship material - Women's Rafting. In the 9 biennial World Championships, they've gotten Gold 4 times (including back-to-back once), Silver once, and Bronze twice.

  • Speaker: Are there opportunities within…, in reply to Katharine Moody,

Yeah. I was with Rosemary right up to the "vinegar", and thought to myself, "No, not vinegar - Worcestershire source !".

  • Polity: The pantheon of sporting dominance,

Another World Championship series worth considering is Women's Squash. From 1987 to 1992 Susan Devoy won 4 of the 5 competitions, and was runner up in the other. From April '84 to Feb '93 she spent 105 of 107 months ranked as world Number 1. (Also note that of the last 10 Women's Squash World Championships, Nicol David of Malaysia has won 8 of them - including 5 consecutive).

  • Polity: The pantheon of sporting dominance,

Since 1984, New Zealand's Men's softball team, the Black Sox, have won 6 of the 9 world championships (including 5 in a row), and were runner up in the other 3 ! Very few New Zealanders know about this incredible sporting achievement. And, in reply to Robyn above, the amount of resources and public support that the Black Sox receive is miniscule compared to the All Blacks.

  • Polity: Meet the middle, in reply to BenWilson,

Thanks for that Ben. Interesting, but, like you, I having trouble drawing any conclusions about it. Of the people who ranked Labour as 10 and National as 0, the most is (as you say) self-ranked as 5 (the largest group). However, the other significant cluster is with people who ranked themselves as 10. So they are presumably Labour supporters, and got the axes wrong (ie left and right held no meaning for them).

Can we categorise people in some other way ? For example :
Leftists : ranked 3 or more lower than Labour & Labour lower or equal to National
Labourites : ranked within 2 of Labour but not within 2 of National
Swing : ranked within 2 of Labour and within 2 of National
Nationalites : ranked within 2 of National but not within 2 of Labour
Rightists : ranked 3 or more higher than National & Labour lower or equal to National
The rest are confused (or uncategorisable at least) ?

Damn hard to get anything useful from it.

  • Polity: Meet the middle, in reply to BenWilson,

    Brent asked:

It is interesting to note that a significant number of people (~80) put National at 0, and a similar number of people put Labour at 10. Were they the same people ?

    Ben replied:

Interesting question…we’ve got the data. Any thoughts about how to answer that question? You want to know specifically about those 160-odd people?

Perhaps a graph of where National was placed for those who ranked Labour at 10, and a graph of where Labour was placed for those who ranked National at 0, would be enlightening.

Similar graphs for where they placed themselves (including did not or invalid ?).

It is interesting to note that a significant number of people (~80) put National at 0, and a similar number of people put Labour at 10. Were they the same people ? And were they just confused, or were they actively dissing this whole left/right paradigm ?

It's also interesting that the shapes are different, with Labour's mode at 4, and National's at 8.
