Robyn, no disrespect but it is hard to claim to be the best rugby team in the world if you haven't won a World Cup for 20 years.
Well, it seems to me that the RWC is just one way of measuring rugby greatness. Surely there's more to rugby than a quadrennial international tournament.
The All Blacks were awesome before the RWC started in 1987, and so why shouldn't they continue to be?

You know, even though the All Blacks don't seem able to win the Rugby World Cup, it still feels like they're the best rugby team in the world.

I was walking along Symonds Street late this morning, and came across a big group of people sitting outside the French Connection restaurant, almost blocking the footpath. With some French reggae playing in the background, they appeared to be having a lively conversation en francais about how awesome the game had been. Oh la la.

I just read the sad news on the Herald's website and this was the first place I came to check the reaction.
I'm so ignorant of the ways of the RWC that I somehow thought the NZ vs France game was tonight, not last night, but I know it was a big one and I know it sucks that NZ lost.
So, kind of like what Jackie said above, I may not be a rugby follower, but y'all have my commiseration.
It's been cool seeing cars driving around with black silver fern flags (and the occasional Fijian flag).

Un excellent blogueur néo-zélandais
C'est tres choice!
I really like the word blogueur. It's just a little bit more elegant than blogger. I guess that makes me une blogueuse.

Could one of our hard-bitten journo contributors explain the origin of the term "vice girl?"
I'd guess that it's a shorter, less sexual sounding way of saying prostitute/hooker/whore/lady of the night. It fits nicely in limited headline space, and isn't going to morally corrupt any innocents who happen to glance at the headline.

Needless to say the words are pretty underwhelming in English, as is the back story (Te Rauparaha hiding from his pursuers).
Wikipedia translates the Ka Mate haka as this:
'Tis death! 'tis death! 'Tis life! 'tis life!
'Tis death! 'tis death! 'Tis life! 'tis life!
This the hairy man that stands here
who brought the sun and caused it to shine
A step upward, another step upward!
A step upward, another... the Sun shines!Perform that with the same gusto that the Maori version is done and I don't see why it couldn't created the same feelings. The sun shines!

Is there some weird "we're not going to put our news and current affairs shows on the list"-thing going on, or has TV One tanked?
Those four tables are all narrowed down to certain demographic groups. The top one is people aged 25 to 54, then 18 to 39, then 18 to 49, and the bottom one is households with children aged 0 to 14.
If you looked at the total viewership figures (5 years old +) One News would be out-rating 3 News.

Nice post. Stephen Fry's blog is priceless, but astonishingly long. Was he on a manic episode or something?
Ah, but it wasn't a blog, it was a blessay - a blog essay, so it's allowed to be long.
But, yeah, perhaps it takes a certain state of mind to write that much. I run out of steam at around 1000 words.

I can't imagine one million PNG people getting up at 2am to watch the All Blacks.
If the good people of Papua New Guinea are such avid rugby watchers, then wouldn't TV3 be better off selling the ad space in the broadcast to PNG companies rather than the apparently insignificant Aotearoa market?
