  • Indiana Jonesing,

Jessie Jackson fought all the way to the convention with half the delegates of the front runner.

Yeah, but 'everyone' 'knew' he wasn't going to actually get the nomination so it was fine to let him run. Run Jessie, Run!
If Clinton had now the same numbers that Jackson had back then, she'd be 'allowed' to continue her run too. No-one ever complains as long as the front runner is never seriously threatened.

  • Hard News: I'm a Pakeha and you can…,

    My Michael Laws Story

Make of it what you will, and it actually happened TODAY
    this morning in fact:

Laws always starts his 9am Radio Live show with a 15-20 minute rant to get the listeners stirred up and calling in. At 9.14AM on 12 May 08 he said (I'm paraphrasing, but I believe I'm completely accurate) that the current situation in Myanmar was tragic and that something had to be done. But that nothing could be done because of the despotic regime ruling Myanmar. Laws suggested that the obvious solution would be for the US or the UN to simply invade Myanmar, and who could argue with that because the people of Myanmar needed rescuing from the corrupt/evil military that control the country.

That in itself should have been enough to foster debate and encourage calls. But Laws decided to ramp it up a bit further. In his effort to alert listeners as to just how bad the Myanmar regime was he said they were worse than the Nazis. Because at least the Nazis didn't kill their own people - unlike the Myanmar military who were indiscriminate and would kill anyone and everyone. Laws even referenced the Gas Chambers, as if they were less brutal, and spoke about all the innocent Myanmar kids who's lives have been ruined.

I found the whole so rant outrageous I actually called the station and I was told I would be the first caller on. In order to be polite and allow Laws the opportunity to save face I prefaced my comment with "Michael, I appreciate this is a live show and that you shoot from the lip sometimes, but don't you think you should reconsider your comments about the Nazis at least not killing their own? I don't think the Jewish people would agree" (I'm paraphrasing myself here).

At this point I found myself 'on hold' (as a former Radio Pacific panel operator I know what this is - the caller is put on hold meaning they can hear the host but the caller can't be heard by the audience) and Laws responding "Of course not, don't be so silly" and then cutting my call.

So I didn't get to tell Laws that I think it's silly to claim the Nazis didn't kill their own, and that he was splitting hairs if he thought Nazis only killed non-Nazis. The Nazi Party was a political party - it was the Germans who killed the Jews and they started with the German Jews. So they were killing their own. And there were plenty of Jewish children slaughtered too.

But evidently Laws thinks the Nazis weren't as bad the Myanmar military junta. By that logic Saddam Hussein wasn't so bad either because he didn't gas his own people - just the Kurds.

Russell: you should try and get the log tape of Laws' opening rant this morning. It might make a suitable topic for your TVNZ7 show.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

Clinton is as much a perpetrator as a victim

I couldn't possibly comment, but apropos Danyl's 'venom' vid, here's one I also found interesting/amusing:

  • Indiana Jonesing,

    This is venom

It's wrong on sooo many levels, and yet I still laughed anyway.
"I'll make 9/11 look like the Teacups at Disneyland!"

(Less funny are some of the offerings under 'Related Videos'.)

  • Indiana Jonesing,

And don't forget women who critiicise Hillary Clinton are gender traitors, Neil.

And my oath aren't there a lot of them. Most of whom start out with "I used to support Hillary, but ..."

"I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on ... Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, ... whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

"There's a pattern emerging here," ~ Hillary Clinton.

The audio of this USA TODAY quote was played on The Daily Show tonite on C4. It was even more damning when you actually hear it.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

    also, from Lyndon's link:

John Edwards's campaign manager has just endorsed Obama, and Edwards himself -- the last challenger to drop out of the race and an important voice -- is appearing on "The Today Show" early tomorrow morning, possibly to finally pick a side.

Edwards has remained studiously quiet since dropping out himself. He's obviously been aware that his chances on being VP depended on endorsing neither candidate until it's over. So if he endorses Obama tomorrow then it's over.

Clinton better grab the VP nomination quick, because tomorrow there may be a chorus suggesting good ol' Edwards. They make the perfect __Ebony & Ivory __ticket. (First photo op: a $12 haircut)

  • Indiana Jonesing,

Two people don't need to like each other to be running mates.

I completely agree, and I think Obama's statement 'proves' he's the bigger man. There's already talk of him paying off her 10+ million dollar debt (been done before, and viable if he'll spend that anyway continuing to run against her). But it could bite him in the bum if she calls him on it and accepts.
It would be fascinating to see Clinton as his VP. Would it herald a new type of VP ie a 'two-fer'? Or would she be forced into the typically subservient VP role? And how long would it last - would she be waiting for him to stuff up or get shot? What if she wanted to run in 2012?

  • Indiana Jonesing,

If we assume that the presidential nomination is out of her reach, ... then I would assume she's lining up the bottom half of the ticket. Which I would have thought she'd already had sewn up.

Both candidates know they will not be the other's VP. They don't actually like eachother, such has been the battle thus far. If Obama nominates Clinton as his VP and if she then accepts it, watch out because Hell will freeze over next.

barring Obama having some super scandal or something,

Which is precisely her reason for hanging on. To be fair this strategy has almost worked for her.

Seriously, why not just go all the way there and say "white trash are never going to vote for a nigger..."

But you're not serious are you? Not even White Power will say that in front of the media... that's why it's called politics.

So is this all about spoiling tactics or has she just totally lost perspective?

She has lost perspective. She cannot see the wood for the trees. Or has she? She knows this is her last chance. She can never run again. She's worked her whole life for this and would have slam dunked it if not for a viable African American candidate. She must be kicking herself now for allowing Obama to make that convention speech all those years ago. Perhaps she has taken a leaf from Malcolm X ie 'By any means necessary'

Come convention he then pulls her forward and they raise arms together and balloon and banners and four hours of cheering from the faithful blah blah blah.

__If__ it happens that is how it will happen. But only after Obama has had her frisked for knives first. When she embraces him watch to see if she points out a spot on his back to the snipers.

  • Flying Nun Moments,

Fair enough: I take you at your word.

Yikes! The Hilary Clinton response ...

Er, you never thought it odd that you never saw a Housequake t-shirt upon your return? Given that it was such a popular/successful event I shoulda sold some T-shirts surely?

Anyway, to put this story to bed (since PAS readers are thinking WTF are they talking about?) I was in charge of BFM T-shirt sales a zillion years ago and at a BFM staff meeting I suggested that revenues could be improved by the station selling T-shirts with designs more relevant to what our listeners were into ie the recent sold-out Housequake party ie to date we hadn't done anything reflective of our 'dance' audience (it was circa 1990 from memory). I even floated the idea of selling a Housequake T-shirt but at the same time suggesting we could pay Mr Brown a royalty on each t-shirt sold. (Although during the royalty negotiation we would undoubtedly have pointed out that Chris Knox and others donated their designs for free, and asked 'Just how much do you love BFM Russell?').

But it didn't happen because the idea was shot down (everything was decided by committee back then, and everyone could be on the committee), because rap is crap and dance music isn't real music anyway and we should be supporting live music. Ah, those were the days!

In hindsight I'm not surprised some mischief makers chose to report it back to you they way they did. Ah, those were the days!
    (I can't stress that enough...)
