  • Field Theory: Send in the clowns,

By the way, considering the other threads that are going, feel free to bitch anything on TV (or anywhere else) that just isn't funny.

The News. both channels. Lazy attempts to satirise actual news bulletins that just don't come off cos they're trying to hard to be ironic. or something.

In an agreeing with Craig shock, I thought the joke on Daffyd was not his stereotypical gayness, but his utter self-absorption that makes him miss what is obvious to everyone else, and his stupidity. I recall when Little Britain first came on to TV, someone lamenting that despite the Alternative Comedy revolution of the 80s, the Brits are still laughing at men dressed as women or mincing about like poofs.

I think the resurrection scene needs a bit of re-working as well.

    Roger Dirom The Producers:

Of course that whole second act has to be rewritten. Theyre losing the war? Excuse me? Its too downbeat!

    and

"[singing] I see a line of beautiful girls dressed as stormtroopers each one a gem. With leather boots and whips on their hips. Its risque, dare I say, S&M! I see German soldiers dancing through France played by chorus boys in very tight pants. And wait theres more! THEY WIN THE WAR! And the dances they do will be daring and new. Turn turn kick turn, turn turn kick turn, one two three kick turn! Keep it sassy, keep it classy, keep it..."

Now that I think about it, the correct response is:

He don't like Slaughterhouse 5? So it goes.

(Can I extend my prejudice to include Nevermind? I'd hate to open that can of worms)

Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse 5. Another book I finally got round to reading after hearing it referred to in hushed, worshipful tones by all and sundry.

Yawn, big f**king deal. Firebombing picturesque mediaeval German cities is wrong. Yes, yes, I get it already, Kurt.

Rich, you and me better step outside cos I'd hate to mess up this nice place. Vonnegut is & was a beautiful writer and Slaughterhouse 5 is a book I would go to war over*. If every Bozo who wanted to be Prez of th US of A read Slaughterhouse 5 & Catch 22 the world would be a better place.

    * and me a vegetarian too.

It's enough to make you rent a car and drive to a World trade fair in Knoxville, TN </I get it>

You can be honest with us Tom. If you didn't steal those clothes from a friend, where did you get them?

That could apply equally well to some of my other favourite writers: Pynchon comes to mind.

I love Pynchon, but really struggled with Mason & Dixon and to this day haven't finished it. Having lost my copy doesn't help.

I also found The Naked Lunch to be so utterly depressing I had to stop reading it.

  • Up Front: The Classics Are Rubbish Too,

I loved Secret History for much the same reason that Emma stated (and possibly the same conversation). What I never forgave Donna Tartt for was her second book: The Little Friend

Wow, really? I wouldn't go to war for The Little Friend, but I found it enjoyable enough. <ducks for cover>

I've just this weekend finished this and found it really good until the end, where, not to spoil it, it sucks arse. I'd invested so much time into it that the ending was more than a bringdown. If it hadn't been a library book I'd have thrown into the Lake (Rotorua, seeing as you're asking)

Jules Verne. Sorry, 20,000 leagues under the sea is dull dull dull. I'm much more fond of Journey to the Centre of the Earth, but I wouldn't want to be stuck on a desert island with it.

Greatest books ever written are (in their entielty) the Flashman novels. sue me.
