  • OnPoint: Budget 2010: What’d you expect?,

It's a core conservative belief: that all people are bastards.

But I thought that conservatives think that lefties think (stay with me here) that all people are bastards, because we don't trust people enough to assume that in the event of the removal of the welfare system they'll give a certain percentage of their wages to charities.

(I think a certain percentage of people are bastards, but a greater percentage just aren't very empathetic.)

  • 2010: The Cultural YTD,

Huh, well you just have to look at the faces, Marilyn Manson and that kid don't look much alike.

I think the urban myth was about Kevin's best friend from The Wonder Years, that kid who looks like Milhouse. He *does* look rather like Marilyn Manson.

Now the kid from Freaks and Geeks is instantly recognisable, despite being so much larger

OMG, I just searched as I haven't seen him since: it's Giant, Terrifying Sam! And I was just watching the 'Parisian night suit' episode of F&G this past weekend...

  • Hard News: What we have really lost,

emboldened Maori bully the New Zealand state

I have met some of the claimants in Northland, through my work. I don't think it would be possible to use the phrase 'emboldened bullies' to describe them. At least, not with a straight face.

    After that, not so much.....

Awww. No love for Private Eyes? (This is a perfect opportunity for someone to say 'I can't go for that. No can do'.)

  • 2010: The Cultural YTD,

would it be too impolitic to express a little less than unfettered enthusiasm at Poi E threatening to become the song of 2010?

Yes, you durned furriner, it would. :) I just watched that new video and am filled with tender fondness for my grey, stalinist childhood with its limited consumer choice and two TV channels. (Two other observations: the original breakdancing dude in the 80s video was such a badass; and all that Michael Jackson-combined-with-kapa-haka stuff in the new parts would be a really fun close reading exercise for a media studies class.)

We old folks and our albums......

Listening to an entire album seems like such an *effort*, Simon, when the 'shuffle' button is *right there*...

Al Green and the Pixies are my two cultural touchstones for this year. Then I got distracted with that whole birth/newborn/pre-eclampsia thing... but Wanda Jackson is coming in June! I'm excited!

  • Hard News: Rousing Auckland,

If you priced an "online reputation management masterclass" too low, nobody would come. I am quite certain of it.

Yes. The prices have to be high - they're the equivalent of clothes on the emperor. Or something.

(Jesus Christ, the best part of $700 for the cheap seats? With apologies to anyone who works as a 'consultant' doing these bullshit seminar type-things for businesses, but... srsly, what a crock. Then again, I am the kind of person who hears the word 'conference' and mentally turns into the Unabomber, so am perhaps not the most impartial judge.)

  • Up Front: The Up Front Guide: Dressing…,

no, there is no reliable test

No, I mean, most of the time we can tell the difference pretty early on (the two types are usually distinguished by wildly disparate whining levels), but 'fuck me, I'm sensitive' guy and 'actually sensitive but also likes the booty' guy need two different headings. Because both of them involve wheatgrass and Foucault, right?

Hey, you missed "sensitive and understanding of women -- willing to listen but still totally up for it if that's what you like."

And you know why? Cause I couldn't come up with an archetype for him. He was a bit more 'drinking organic wheatgrass and reading Foucault'.

Are we able to in some way distinguish the above guy, who is totally admirable, from the 'fuck me, I'm sensitive' guy, who is totally phony?

Someone beat me to the Tim Gunn reference, but I would like to note that way back in the first series of ProjRun, one of the contestants referred to Tim, delightfully, as a 'foxy bitch'.
