4 days in Los Angeles, on the other hand...

Beats an hour in Palmerston North.
And Craig, thanks for the delightful postcard of you and David on a bike.

. (I’m going to particularly miss that handsome English academic who narrates various cosmological programmes).

I found him more than a little annoying, young upstart, how could he possibly know anything at his age? (or am I getting old)
Michael Mosley's "The Story of Science" is well worth a watch too for its historical content and if the government was sensible they would watch and take note.

I do enjoy seeing passionate scientists enthuse about their work.

"Bang Goes the Theory" fits that bill nicely.

Bronagh and John pandering to their adolescent base

Base indeed. Nice to see them poking fun at the people of Christchurch (NOT!) but I suppose it explains the brown trousers, he's full of it eh?.

  • Legal Beagle: Shirking their responsibilities?,

It is not that dissimilar to actors taking on a real life role to gain understanding of a trade or skill in my humble opinion, it brings depth to the performance.
Of course we would have to draw the line if, for instance, a Minister of Broadcasting were to have a job at Sky Tv, that would seem to be a conflict of interest and we couldn’t have that, could we.
On a slightly off topic note. The MMP Review banner that appears on this very site has an image of a nut and a spanner, the spanner is “undoing” the nut, thus giving me the impression that the intent is to dismantle MMP. This may by unintentional and could have been avoided by a little mechanical experience.

  • Hard News: Reading the Numbers, in reply to Hilary Stace,

great science programmes including those so full of explosions that they make Mythbusters look boring,

Breaking news. Scientists find explosions boring.
I would ponder the possibility that there are more scientist who were attracted to the discipline by explosions than not.

My logic leap is that they are not being stupid, they are intentionally obfuscating to further their own agendas, whatever they may be, and that is corrupt.

The thing is that those hidden agenda are all the same “how much can I make out of it?”
They are all too damned selfish to partake in a conspiracy. If you scratch the surface you will find no end of “Nest Feathering”. Corrupt indeed.

I use the word very reluctantly,

Yes, I wish it wasn't necessary too but with these mongrels at the helm we have little choice.

I think I can write it here...smells of corruption to me.

Has anyone else noticed that if you use that word in a Herald comment it gets censored?.
Way to wipe out corruption eh? Just hide and deny.

  • Hard News: Press Play > Budget,

    And Johnkey says...

"If you were really going to go out and buy a country, why wouldn't you want to buy New Zealand?

"Would you really want these other countries that are highly indebted, have hugely inflexible and inefficient systems, don't have the natural resources that we have, don't have the potential that we have."

Mr Key, speaking to the TransTasman Business Circle in Auckland...

If you were going to buy a country. Hmmm. Does he know of one for sale?.
I wonder if he was saying that at the National Party's northern regional convention in Auckland. At "The Sky City Convention Centre"
Apparently Sky City are short of convention centres and pokie machines so the Natsies do their AGM there.
    Nah, just a coincidence eh?

  • Hard News: Press Play > Budget, in reply to Andrew C,

why? They still make money on the sale,

Ah, but. The house they are buying is attracting tax too, from the vendor.
Effectively the market is being hit twice and the market will pass that on in increased prices and then the whole thing runs away with itself and we all go broke and the Government gets all the money. Or something.
But seriously, you don't make money on a booming house market buy buying and selling the family home until you scale down and then the kids want a flat and...
The tax is aimed at the speculative end of the development market and that really needs looking at, it was the inflated values of that market that burst the bubble. Had that bubble been taxed effectively then we might have a bit more in the public purse.
