  • Cracker: Wallywood,

There's been "arguments" both ways, and of course everything in them boils down to subjective opinion of artistic worth.

But at some point, you have to accept that some things actually *are* artistically 'better' than other things. Otherwise I could say 'hey, Rock of Love Bus is as good as The Wire', which is clearly utter pants as a statement. No one, even the most determinedly obtuse pineapple-on-their-pizza-eating populist, could *possibly* believe that. And one of the reasons that it isn't true is because you can analyse the work and construct an argument, using the dreaded criticism, in order to prove that point.

(Disclaimer: I watched every episode of all three Rock of Love series. With joy.)

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

Rich, you think I've actually *read Tolkien*? I have a very low hey-nonny-nonny threshold, and it tops out at about, say, Richard Thompson. :)

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

I find Jackson deeply suspect as a filmmaker.

It's not like I can exactly convincingly rebut any of the points you've made about the LOTR trilogy and King Kong, Caleb, but the source material was so problematic to begin with (the original KK is just One Giant Miscegenation Horror Fantasy, for example). I mean, obviously he could have done something else and radically revamped those themes, but to be honest I don't think he's *that* reflective or innovative a filmmaker. Also, to give him credit: Heavenly Creatures! Forgotten Silver! (And I have no problem with the earlier blood-spattered/shagging puppets work either.)

  • Hard News: Good Newsing,

    taking Kim Deal sailing Wednesday

    <boggle> Awesome!

There were quite a number of pregnant punters around too I noticed. Is this a new genre? Preg Rock?

I noticed that too. I think it's the age of the band and the fans. As we were filing out I said to my husband 'success! And I didn't give birth!' The guy in the row below us laughed and said 'yeah, I'm pretty happy about that myself!' He would have been in prime catcher position. :)

So yeah, I think we can safely discount 'two consecutive Pixies shows' as a labour induction technique. I suppose I should start eating vindaloo?

  • Hard News: Good Newsing,

    Vector Arena...

I feel so, so jammy for making it to both shows.

(It also occurred to me, as 12,000 people sang 'you are the son of incestuous union!' under the house lights during 'Nimrod's Son', what very strange lyrics they are for us to know so well.)

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

Shit, I am now thoroughly confused by this entire discussion. I... didn't call anyone 'defective'. Did I?

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

    You're talking it up anyway.

I mentioned it in *passing*, as an example of a film I like a lot for which one would have to 'suspend one's disbelief', 'just enjoy it', etcetera, in order to note that I am not, in general, someone with a bug up my ass about film realism or believability. I don't understand what you're not getting about this point.

I'll leave the 'I'd hit that' metaphor for someone else to unpack, if you don't mind. :)

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

So Ben, now we're talking about how you wouldn't discuss something you've never seen and have no intention of seeing? Well, I should hope not.

Then why do people keep trying to tell other people that they are somehow wrong in enjoying/not enjoying a film?

You're right, of course. I just object to the phrase 'desperate bitching', as if there's some sort of 'trying too hard' aspect to not liking the damn thing. I *wanted* to like it. I went in with happy expectations, dammit.

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

I enjoy analysing - why make em mutually exclusive, I say.

    Well, yes, exactly. Can't I be a *pointy-headed* zero-gravity trapeze artist on ecstasy? :)
