Trucks on the road! Driving back on Highway One from a taping of Media 7 last night, with a vanload of 9 students, it sure wasn't fun being wedged between double-banger trucks doing 110km in pouring rain.

: my peony Now aren't they a beautiful flower. I am sooo looking forward to creating our new garden up north. I hope I can grow Peonies.
How far north? I believe they need cold, cold winters to really flourish. I know of growers in Otago and near Raetihi. But I hope you can grow them--they are more than beautiful--probably the most luxurious and sensual flower ever.

On ingrained class attitudes in Britain : I once interviewed Richard Hoggart (who wrote The Uses of Literacy) and he stumped me with his very first questions "Are you from a working class background? Are you a socialist?" I guess my response to both questions would have been a qualified 'yes' but I was really flummoxed by the questions.
On gardens: my peony (transplanted from Nelson) has come to life and extending shoots. I am hoping for luscious blooms

Why bother? I am sure your would look as serene in a comfortable shirt. A jacket isn't going to keep you any warmer in the soil. ;-)
One of the great pleasures of academic life is is not having to wear the uniforms of business and corporate life. In fact, the only dress code I have to observe is checking that that my fly is zipped up before I step into a lecture theatre. You occasionally see blokes in suits and ties around the university but they must vice-chancellors or pro-vice chancellors (are there any anti-vice chancellors?) or SIS spies. -
I will be at Media 7 on Wednesday with a vanload of my students. Might have to forewarn them about that popular Mr Haywood ;-)
I agree with Donald's comments re the ghettoising of TVNZ digital channels. As much as I treasure TVNZ 6 & 7, I am continuously disappointed by the large number of folk who don't watch them/can't receive them/don't know about them.

I bought a dinner jacket a few years ago
Does it make the food taste better? My father-in-law was recently taken aback when I told that I have never owned a suit (other than a crushed velvet horror in the 1970s). Just wondering if anyone else has remained suitless.
Because it is Friday and certain liberties are permitted: has anyone listened to the new Arcade Fire Suburbs? I think it might be a grower because it doesn't have the immediate zing of Neon Bible or Funeral. But I have started playing the "City Without Children" track repeatedly, for it has a most tremendous base line.

What I regard as examples of social engineering are the motivations of some home schoolers (shutting off children from the temptations of the world and raising them as replicants of their parents) and doctrinaire schools such as Middleton Grange.

One particularly difficult ptp situation is with shop assistants, who ask the pat question, 'How is your day going?" I am so tempted to respond, "Do you want details? Do you really care?".
Just back from an interesting Media Bites event (part of the Wintec Spark Festival) , with Steve Braunias hosting and Paul Holmes talking (at great length). Winston Peters was in the front row, as was Lisa Lewis, flashing her wares. PH is quite appealing when he muses on life, rather than broadcasting.
