Which post was that, Josh? Can't seem to find it...

It did involve fleas though, so I'm sure you'll all be disappointed.

Indeed. Your mention of coffee did make me remember that semi-secret teashop above Farmers, though.

  • Hard News: What about that Welfare…, in reply to Rich Lock,

Anyway, since this thread is careering (ahaha) off the rails, here's something to drag it back on topic: Welfare to work in the UK.

    Dear God.

It would be tantamount to a declaration of war, and Japan would kick their arse with or without direct US military support. It's not going to happen.

Agreed - it's the artillery tubes pointing at Seoul that are the real concern.

It gave a certain frisson to a very pleasant 2006 stopover in Seoul to look up at the surrounding hills and ponder all that weaponry, just waiting there for word from Pyongyang.

Getting further offtopic, but - has there been much in the way of Pike River conspiracy theory crawling out of the woodwork yet?

ETA: "Conspirational" it is, I should have trusted your expertise...

It seems like a classic phrase for every season though, not specifically 2010 in origin - and I recall someone's comment re "Always blow on the pie" that surely a phrase can't be word of the year?

Don't forget Nature's Window, which had a golden few years selling genuinely high-quality educational toys and games, before it shifted down to flogging just above dollar shop grade plastic crap and finally folded this year.

Plus they turned off the waterfall towards the end, the bastards.

I confess, I probably fell out of love with St Lukes for good when their Bennett's bookstore closed. That was my favourite bolthole on family trips to the shopping centre, by some margin. Even now I get a bit nostalgic when I spot bits of old Bennett's fitout in other shops elsewhere (Bed Bath and Beyond at Lynnmall, for instance, or UBS at Auckland University campus).

In retrospect, just a well-stocked chain bookstore with "classic" wooden trappings, but so much about retail isn't rational anyway so why should my retail nostalgia be any different?

Pedestrians can cross to it at the lights, which contain the usual feature of a button for pedestrians that stops all the traffic. They even have two sets of lights to choose from, depending whether they are coming from St Lukes mall or just walking down Morningside Drive.

Granted - although the crossing outside St Lukes is hardly pleasant - very small spaces for pedestrians in the middle, amidst quite heavy traffic going both ways.

One annoyance particular to going into the Supercentre (the shops across the road) is the very short right-turn arrow phase from St Lukes Road - which means cars end up just about racing across to make it into the Supercentre access road in time. Doesn't make for a nice environment somehow.

Did you already have text in the response field? It won't replace or append to the comment, only add the quote if there isn't anything there already.

Don't think so... I may have inadvertently had a space or something similar. Works perfectly now though. Thanks!
