  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Oh, Jesus, I'm crushing your dissent now? Here That's too sillyto even be offended by.

No, I wouldn't say that. But I have felt somewhat browbeaten.

But you're quite right about one thing: I'm going to stay the hell away from the neo-Victorian "Scarlet Woman" bullshit

I've tried to too. But my honest view remains that Rankin has keenly used the media to deliver a harsh and censurious message about other families that she may not have done justice to herself. Her public crack about Helen Clark being "childless" was particularly vile.

I wouldn't have commissioned those stories as an editor, but my sympathy is tempered in the circumstances.

When it comes to hypocrisy and bad faith, I've got my scars suggesting to the right-wingnuts that Helen Clark's marriage and what she does in private, with consenting adults of whatever gender, ain't actually a legitimate area of public interest. And it's not particularly relevant that she's in public life, and fairly prone to taking high moral tones on all kinds of subjects.

What are you actually alleging there?

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

It would be cool if she were to say the same about other peoples' relationships.

I can't even begin to articulate how tired and distasteful that's getting, Russell.

Craig, I get that you're not going to acknowledge even a speck of hypocrisy or bad faith in Rankin, But I'd be grateful if you could stop hectoring and guilt-tripping me about taking a different view.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

Should they dismantle their protection so that primary school teachers can have a crisp digital copy of a chunk of barney for their kids to dance to?

I meant to address this earlier: no they shouldn't have to dismantle their copy-protection, but no one's asking them to. The software tools to rip DVDs exist and are widely available.

It's a matter of acknowledging that US law provides for fair use in education, and that there are ways of exercising that use. Even our more modest concept of fair dealing allows for copying for purposes of criticism and review, which is the purpose of media studies.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Actually, Simon, I'd just have said that her marriage isn't a problem, it isn't an asset, it's actually nobody's fucking business.

It would be cool if she were to say the same about other peoples' relationships.

But I fear this really has turned into a mess with legs.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Hmm. If the above is true (esp Dave C's comments), then I do take a different view of the stories.

I'd just like to say that I'm not a poster child for matrimony either, as moral conservatives occasionally remind me. But I have been living in glorious sin with my darling for 21 years ...

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

That's right, folks. Divorced and remarried? You're not worthy -- hell, are you even part of a real "family"? When the officially permissible period you have to wait before you can remarry? Hell, why don't we shag the moral high horse and make adultery a capital crime?

Craig, I fear you are putting words in the poor woman's mouth. What she said was simply what she said, and certainly didn't need exaggerating like that.

Perhaps, given that her close friend died in tragic circumstances, she too deserves a little respect.

That actually pisses me off beyond reason, Russell, and you know something: I'm past the point where I can, or want to, try "reasonably" discussing something I find deeply loathesome.

Okay, I'm sorry if I have upset you. I've tried to put my own view in context, but it is my view. Just that.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

And I'm not going to let you get away with putting anything in my mouth.

Like, say, "dirty home-wrecking succubus bitch"?

I don't give a damn if there's rejoicing and dancing in the streets, it was a vile story. Shouldn't have seen print. Period.

Okay. But that wasn't the argument I was responding to. It was the appeal to "innocent third parties", which I took to mean the family, whose feelings I said it would be perilous to assume. Which "innocent third parties" were you referring to?

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

That's right, Rich. That dirty home-wrecking succubus bitch deserves every bit of sanctimonious, leering hypocritical cant we can muster.

Damn! I should have known that your counter-move in a debate about hypocrisy would have been to play the hypocrisy card ...
