  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

And just to raise the mood a little, a nice column by Ann Chinn in (eh?) the ODT:

Families Commission appointee Christine Rankin this week told TV's Close Up: "I've come to understand that the very best place for little New Zealanders to be brought up, is with Mum and Dad.

"And you know, we never talk about that family unit any more, in case we offend someone who's not part of one. I think that's ridiculous."

I could not be sure, but she sounded as if she means to enforce the nuclear family as part of her role. "The Families Commission has got to get results."

So if, like many New Zealanders, you have a non-nuclear household and feel daunted by the prospect of change, here are some helpful hints for nuking your family...

... Do try to remember, when Christine Rankin pledges to stick up for people who are "different", she is talking about herself, not you.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Nope -- come on Russell, WTF does that have to do with the position Rankin's been appointed to? And would this be open to discussion if, not to put too fine a point on it, you didn't loathe the person it was directed at?

It addressed something that had been written in The Press, reproduced by Kiwiblog and referenced by me, so my initial inclination was not to delete the whole thing. But I did ask for your views and I've gone with that.

I did address it when I saw it, but I can't be on deck moderating all the time. My apologies if I got it wrong, but I don't think it was worse than your ghastly turn of phrase about Greg O'Connor and Len Snee this week.

But honestly? I did try and make clear in the original post that it's more that I'm staggered by the really explicit clash between the censurious moral message delivered by the For the Sake of Our Children Trust, and the actions of the person running it. Yes, that does make me judgemental.

Done. I took out the unfortunate attempt at humour, rather than the whole post. Everyone okay with that?

which provides an alternative to going through the CBD for anyone bypassing Auckland

And a much more efficient route to the airport from the North Shore.I like to think I'm being pretty staunch about that, given that it's really going to mess up the Northwestern motorway for we Pt Chevalians.

  • Hard News: Some Week,

Moana Mackey seems to have the hang of this blogging thing.

    From Hansards past:

Phil Heatley: I was disturbed to hear the Hon Chris Carter say that he was rushing this bill through Parliament and wanting a commencement date of July next year, because the councils wanted certainty. That member has forgotten that councils are there as servants of the people, and those people are the ratepayers. They are the ones who pay the bills, and the ones who will foot the bill for the consultation required because of this document. So the Hon Chris Carter might like to rush the bill through this Parliament to suit those regional and district councils and unitary authorities, but he should remember that it will be the ratepayers who pay the bill. To date, those ratepayers have not been given the chance to consider the 300 changes to the 600 clauses in this bill. That is what concerns me.

    ....

Dr Wayne Mapp: His third position is, as far as I can see it is: “Auckland is a mess. We’ll impose a solution, and basically it can go to hell, because the Government knows best.”

There are some compensations in being in Opposition ...

Of course they do, and so do we south of the BH's. Why, just yesterday I was in Ponsonby, gazing in wonder upon the $500 shirts and $400 shoes and $1500 jackets in the 5th Avenue men's clobber shop!

5th Avenue puzzles me. Those $500 shirts don't even look that great.

If you want a nice shirt, go to Strangely Normal. They're wicked.

And OTOH, the last time I arrived in the US of A, I was hectored, interrogated and treated like a potential criminal. Come to think of it, leaving was nearly as bad.

its easy to over react but who in reality is requiring excerpts from dvds? Universities? then they already have all they need to address the issue. primary schools? maybe not so much.

I know it's been a while since we were all at school, but these days secondary school English and Media courses both examine visual media texts in some detail.

It does remind me of the time that Michael Glading declared that no one needed iTunes playlists because there were perfectly good carousel CD players available.

The town hall install is done by an Australian company called The Electric Canvas .

Along with local geezers The Darkroom, who have their own pretty stellar track record in video installations.

They also did the graphics for Media7!
