  • Hard News: The Social Retail,

Essentially you'd be giving him a fairer indication of what really goes on and better competitive grasp of market realities, which I guess you are doing writing about this here...

I think he'd be fully appraised of market realities in his own line of business, Mark.

In the case of supermarkets, especially the ones in Grey Lynn, it's about fortnightly "wine sales" where they sell wine at a loss (even after screwing down the suppliers) in order to pull in customers for their other products, which are not so cheap.

It's absurd to talk about independent wine retailers competing on that basis. They need to do what Jayson does, and work on their strengths.

  • Southerly: At the RWMC with Alan Bollard,

Alan didn't happen to have a polaroid of Mary-Sue did he?

Perhaps wearing some trashy lingery he'd bought her?

Turned out, her father had more money than God. The PI he hired in the late 80s retrieved the pictures so the big wedding could go ahead.

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

Perhaps it was as simple as this: Simon was out following routine campaigning with Melissa Lee, and it would have been a thoroughly average story were it not for David Baird's outrageous statements which were just too astonishing to be anything but the main angle.

Quite. No editorial conspiracy here, methinks, especially from a reporter like Simon Collins. But the "grey bureaucrat reputation" thing does show how an idea can propagate passively through the media. It's not actually saying he is a grey man, it's saying that, well, people say he's a grey man ...

  • Hard News: Going Underground,

Gosh. Brian Rudman's not pussyfooting around this morning:

If the Government comes out with an el cheapo, neighbourhood-ruining, overland solution for the Waterview Connection in the next week or so, it will suggest National's market research shows they haven't a chance of winning the Mt Albert byelection.

And that being so, then a plague on this Labour-voting backwater, we'll give them the motorway from hell and divert the money to more National-friendly places.

All of you dumb fucks, Christopher -- plague on all your houses, and I hope it hurts. Sorry, the next time anyone wants to talk about several hundred million dollars like its petty cash sod off to the nearest school, hospice or women's refuge and cash the reality check.

Steady on. I think Christopher regards himself as backing the option that costs less in the long run.

Plus also the primary school was another consideration being so close to the new motorway. Christopher, quickly whilst I'm here, just wanted to say good on you for fighting on behalf of the elderly and the disabled with regards to the Sandringham Kiwibank.

And from me. I confess to feeling a twinge of PA Pride when I saw the story in the local paper.

  • Hard News: Going Underground,

Curiously enough, Transit NZ's proposal does consider the interests of walkers and cyclists:

Supporting public transport, walking and cycling
The Waterview Connection project will take business freight and other through traffic off local roads:

freeing them up for improved public transport services and time reducing 'rat running' on residential streets
The design caters for the future expansion of the Avondale Southdown rail line and its electrification.

Existing pedestrian and cycle links will be retained.

At the southern end, the Mt Roskill cycleway (under construction) will be extended to connect with Richardson Road

Extending Maioro St to connect to Stoddard Rd will provide a new pedestrian ( and vehicle)connection between New Windsor and Mt Roskill / Wesley areas of Auckland.

There's also a map of the project area and the interchange design

  • Hard News: Going Underground,

And would Owen McShane say what he'd usually say if it cut through Remuera or Epsom?

Oh, probably. You have to understand that Owen issues his fatwas against selfish suburbanites and their families from the Centre for Resource Management Studies HQ in Kaiwaka, Northland.
