  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

    It's hard to take him seriously when he spouts stuff like this.

    I found the whole thing hard to take seriously.

    I'd like to see a community grow up around the site, dedicated to keeping government honest. I think an open site that shows progress and procrastination by government agencies in answering OIAs is valuable in itself. If nothing else, it may spur those answering if they know that there are others watching from the sidelines.

    Also, the fact that they're neither professional journalists or Opposition MPs puts it in in line with the expectations of the people who drafted the OIA, who envisaged it much more as a tool for the public than the preserve of politicians fishing for a gotcha.

    I wouldn't even know how to go about kicking his arse or even if there is any legal recourse available (he responded with essentially a "fuck you, I'm within my rights" email).
    The global economy presents lots of its own problems doesn't it.

    What a major pain. I'm assuming you don't have a registered trademark. Chris Hocquard might be able to help you, but whether it'll be worth the cost is another matter.

    One potential option is the domain names resolution process -- it's not like you haven't defended your namespace, and this guy just adding a hyphen looks wrong on the face of it.

    But I don't know much about that: can anyone help?

    Your man might well be former head of the Transport and Urban Linkages Committee, Richard Simpson. The CitRats absolutely hated his guts because he had ideas (good ideas, in my opinion) and a huge architectural vision for Auckland.

    I wish more people would listen to Richard Simpson. He has genuinely visionary ideas.

    The thing the CitRats hated most about Richard, and Christine Caughey, was that they dared to win in what was considered Tory home turf.

    I blogged last year about Aaron Bhatnagar's disgraceful use of Wikipedia to attack his opponents.

    It's good to see Rodney et al stating similar concerns

    Yes, I'm pleasantly surprised by that.

    The guys at Koordinates have started an Official Information Blog which is a running commentary of their OAI requests. It makes for interesting reading.

    That's a great blog! Very useful ...

    Classic censorial behaviour from prosecutors in the US taking an "educational" approach to teen sxting:

    Yikes. Here's the suit filed against Mr Skumanick, the district attorney by the girls and their mothers.

    He appears to be a censurious nutbar who doesn't like teenagers. Girls especially.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

    @Simon:

    My old stuff will be up on eMusic mid year-ish...and iTunes and a few other places.

    Let's talk before then and use PA to get some hype behind it. It'll be fun.

    @Peter:

    These are two key points for Rob re eMusic. If you are a non-mainstream music fan it really is good, so hopefully this means it is worth alternative/independent labels being there. There may be a question over how much is being earned but I would hope that over time, with your catalogue available, that it provides some kind of income for the music makers.

    I think there's likely to be a big difference between letting a catalogue sit passively on eMusic, and really working it. You need to get your mates in there giving the records good reviews, or making playlists. It might be an idea to join so you can communicate with the NZ music buffs already there.

    Rob, Hype Machine is indexing a couple of blogs praising Kimo. They link to your website, but Hypem, because it's automated, can't tell the difference between your Kimo and the American one -- and so is sending people to a sale for the US band on eMusic, iTunes and Amazon. Hence my confusion ...

    What can I say about an image that we can't safely look at.

    Emma checked with me, and my view was that it would be reckless to link to images that have been defined as "child pornography" by a court.

    Personally, I think the decision in that case was nutty, but that's where we're at.

    From the are-you-out-of-your-freaking-mind-you-morons, department:

    The latest teenage girl in America to be charged with child pornography offences after sending her boyfriend nude pics of herself with her mobile phone.

    If she is convicted, she will spend the rest of her life on a public sex offenders' register. Does nobody involved in this process have any speck of sense at all?

    I do wonder if this insanity is, like the zealous age-of-consent prosecutions in some states, driven by people who deep down believe that teenagers should be made to suffer for their alleged moral failings.

    The French documentary on these trends in the US, Outlawing Indecency , is out there on the wires, and highly recommended. I was shouting at the television by the end of it.
