  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

Something that has just occurred to me (on account of being very slow witted): would this TiVo thing work with the Sky channels, correct? I imagine that if the freeview channels land on the sky platform then the MySky would work with those too.

Sorry: it's a digital terrestrial decoder. No worky with Sky.

The story of Taylor Swift is instructive.

She was the biggest-selling artist in America last year, having succeeded in making country music cool with teenage girls.

She's on Big Machine Music, an indie founded by a former Dreamworks executive (distribution by Universal). RCA missed out on signing her when she was 15 because it wouldn't let her write her own songs.

Her label did innovative things: exclusive CDs with both Target and Wal-mart, and putting her debut album on eMusic, where it was the best-selling release for what seemed like months (she even got the nod from Lenny Kaye!). She is now officially freaking huge. I don't think a major label would have gotten her there.

There's an interesting bit about eMusic here.

Killer fact: for a while there at the beginning of the decade, Universal owned eMusic. It wasn't until it was onsold to a private capital management company that it started to work.

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

Sorry, what I am trying to say is that some form of truly free plug and play television broadcast needs to remain a while yet, because some people don't get caught up with sreen size/resolution.

Freeview channels are free to receive.

The Freeview HD decoders have been as low as $249 (you can buy a satellite one for much less), and they offer considerably better pictures and more channels than the old analog TV. That's not too bad.

Myself, I think you almost have an obligation to take a catalogue to somewhere like this. It's pretty hard to complain about piracy if it ain't on offer

It's damning that the first record released on Flying Nun is available on eMusic (along with all Roy Montgomery's solo work) -- but only because Siltbreeze re-released the Pin Group recordings. If it were left up to Warners, it would be as unavailable as most of the rest of the FN catalogue. Grrrr ...

Although I might win Lotto today, so I'll buy the FN catalogue and sort it all out.

Plenty of sites offer a 320kbs option to the purchaser too, but most people are satisfied with the 192kbs offered by eMusic.

eMusic's rips sound pretty good to my ears -- better than iTunes sounded before "iTunes Plus".

It's a very ill informed rant.

    It certainly is.

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

My point is that the box is only as good as long as someone at TVNZ is pulling together the EPG data for ALL the freeview channels and sending it to your box - if 10 years from now your box is one of the few still working in the country and TVNZ decides that having some guy make you a weekly EPG just for you they'll probably shut you off.

But it's not TVNZ that stocks the EPG, it's Hybrid Television, the TiVo licence-holder that TVNZ owns a third of. It's their job to have all Freeview stations on board, and providing data -- and they did launch with all FTA channels in Australia.

So you'd be talking about TiVo failing so badly that the licence-holder, and its shareholders, give up. I think a more likely glitch is Mediaworks finding a way to avoid giving their EPG data to TiVo. That would mess things up.

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

I too am fairly excited that Tivo is making it to NZ, however I don't think it's quite a rosy a picture as you paint in your post, Russell.

Fair enough; it may not be. But, as I said, the TVNZ management and the Hybrid Television CEO Robbee Minicola, had a better story to tell than I expected.

I'll take your word for it on the $A price -- I must have written that down wrong. Obviously, price is going to very important -- along with the way it's done at retail. TV-Tivo bundles would seem to be a good idea.

But it holds more promise of being an actual business with new revenues than anything else TVNZ has done so far.

The CDN was the thing that intrigued me. Jason Paris acknowledged that discussions with ISPs over that would provide an opportunity for TVNZ to get a similar arrangement for the web version of ondemand. Given that Sky is all over TVNZ in telco relationships, that's quite handy in itself.

Rob, have you ever looked at eMusic for distributing your stuff? I have no idea of the payment setup but it's a much better application than iTunes and is the place to go for alternative, non-mainstream stuff with a huge membership so would be a good fit for your catalogue.

I reckon. One of Rob's bands, Kimo, are there but with a different label -- they're getting a bit of Hype Machine action to send people to eMusic too.

Seriously, Rob, how come? I know you sell via PayPal from your own website, but why not have the goods on sale where the people are?

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

If it has that function, at some point someone's going to introduce a 'can't fast forward through ads on programmes you have recorded your own self' function, is what I'm thinking.

They can't really control that, and if they did, it would make their product extremely unattractive.

Maybe all that pot I smoked made me 'noid. :)

    I couldn't possibly comment ...

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

-what are the disadvantages of Tivo vs a Zinwell (or similiar) PVR?

The TiVo is about twice the size (like an old-school VHS). Apart from that, nothing I can think of.

-does tivo record HD programs in HD so when I watch them they will be in HD still?

    Yes.

-does 2 channel mean I can watch 1 and record 1 other at the same time (or alternatively record 2 at the same time), or is it some other techno term?

Yes, you record one and watch one, or record two at a time -- while you play back another, if you desire.

-Can I start watching half way through recording with the tivo box still recording the remainder (im sure there is a term for this...)

    Yes.

-How do I get stuff from my Tivo to my computer, and vice versa, assuming I have a wireless adsl2 modem. Can i do it wirelessly, or do I need to use a usb thumb drive (or similar) each time. Especially worried about the EPG if it does not go via the air. Our TV is not really in a place I can connect my computer to it via wires easily.

You'll need to pay about $70 for the USB wi-fi adaptor if you can't wire it.

-"There are no buttons to jump either forward or back, just fast-forward and reverse." What does this mean? Is this for the ondemand stuff, or permanently? As i dont currently have a pvr I am not quite sure what this is

Some PVRs have a button that jumps you forward a specified time, without having to ffwd, and also a "what did he just say?" button to go back. MySky and TiVo don't. You have to use ffwd or rewind, at up 30x speed.
