    the ultimate contract negotiation technique.

    I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

I don't think that character could negotiate

  • Hard News: The Bollard Book,

    Another bit of currency trivia.

When all the coins got changed 5 or so years ago, what percentage of coins in circulation got handed/ cashed in?

All I needed to do was ask the Reserve Bank. Turns out over $80m of old coins are still out and about.

5c coin $22.6m 70% of all 5c coins ever issued have not been returned
    10c coin $15.3m 60%
    20c coin $17.0m 50%
    50c coin $13.1m 40%

Nope - s17 is protected. But Brownlee gets to be dictator till 2012, and change almost any law he feels like. Even if he won't, the mere fact that he can is intolerable in a democratic society under the rule of law.

I got it wrong. But a perfect example of why law should not be passed in such a hurry.

In fact Lewis, the bill would allow the Minister to set aside the sunset clause . . .

thanks Graeme. A number of us have been coming up with other equally possible scenarios. Brownlee could abolish any requirement for people in Remuera Khandallah and Fendalton to pay any rates. Etc etc etc. Sweeping away 500 years of carefully developed constitutions is not to be done lightly.

Maybe Thomas More might protect us?

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

Slater is clearly not regarded as enough of an embarrassment by those who determine whose views get broadcast.

Which is something you might want to take up with whoever is pretending to edit The Herald nowadays, but please leave the National Party out of that pathology.

sorry Craig, you and teh Natz don't get off that easily. You've enjoyed the association too much. Some of us still remember that gorgeous (dahling) photo of the man with Melissa and John last year. You lie down with a dog, don't moan about fleas.

On the other hand, agree totally about La Watkin. Total moan. Spoonfeed me, she cried. Has she heard of the idea of doing some real work?

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

I struggle to imagine that the 100,000 figure is likely.

And Lilith, I am too far away to know the true number either. Yes, tens of thousands will have had minor damage. The media focus, as is their job, on the media-worthy such as Bexley and Seabreeze Close.

There are an uncounted number of seriously damaged homes. Who knows what the 100,000 count includes?

The full story will play out in the coming days and weeks.

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

At the 2006 census there were 201,657 'occupied private dwellings' in the Canterbury region.

The region is Kaikoura south to Waitaki, with 2/3 of the population in Christchurch - say 135,000 homes.

The students FB page has just been updated, saying they will:

concentrate the effort in one particular area to intensify the workforce, and to prevent people feeling they aren’t getting anywhere.

Please meet at Avonside tomorrow morning at 10am, we will have a 5 minute debrief with Civil Defence and Council staff. Meet at the corner of Alloway St and Avonside drive.

I think Emma and David can make them welcome
