  • Hard News: Essay Question,

Glad to hear that someone got the Air NZ tickets because I don't recall any mention of prize awarding and was wondering. Great to do it nice and discretely though.

I think Damian felt a bit put off the whole thing after being accused of being an evil monster for giving some stuff away, but he definitely gave away the tickets.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

The question mark most likely means your hard drive is working its way towards the trash can, and at the very least you should confirm that your time machine backups are working (and going to an external drive, obviously, Time Machine is only half as useful when it goes to the main hard drive).

Of course. The backups all seem to be there on my Maxtor 500GB. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

I have an Apple TV and like it despite all its shortcomings, but it is a pain to re-encode video from codecs that aren't Apple-supported. Recently I was turned on to Western Digital's WD TV device.

We use the PS3 for most of that -- but I more meant watching streaming video, which the PS3 does, sorta, but it's clunky for such an expensive device.

With YouTube now offering HD streaming and most broadcaster websites (including TVNZ ondemand) offering a good experience, ordinary folks need a box that very simply bridges their internet video onto their TV.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

Can I just say that Motorway Patrol is one of my favourite programmes?

I think my favourite ever was the one where the woman drove into the car that had stopped on the harbour bridge and blathered on so much that the police pretty much had to check her boot, which proved to contain several dildos and some stuff that looked like it might be of use in drug manufacture. It was top viewing at a fraction of what the same thing would cost on Outrageous Fortune.

Paging Simon Griggs. Would Simon Griggs please report to this campaign immediately, to put his money where his mouth is ...

When you're calling someone out, it helps if you spell their name right ...

Besides, it's still early in Bali ...

That division - call it Highway Patrol perhaps - should be plainly seen to be separate - separately commanded and with different-coloured vehicles and uniforms, preferably black and white.

Is he being wry and ironic, or having a flashback?

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

Excuse nosiness Russell but how much for Kermadec? I would always rather pay more for something really good than a medium amount for a medium meal.

The menu's here (although it's not quite the same as the one on our table):

    http://www.kermadec.co.nz/Menus/index.php

Mains $40 or under, entrees around $20. Better than most places at that price, IMO. The wine list is choice (I was impressed to see several cellared options for the De Bortoli Noble One, my favourite dessert wine) but steep.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

Russell: Single parent family, I am shocked at your un-politically correct assumption of nuclear family-hood! I think I shall write to Santa and dob you in.

Whoops. I read "mother and uncle" as "mother and father" ...

I agree with you all... Since my alternate plan of locking her in a tower until she is thirty has been ruled out as possibly an over-reaction and you can't protect them forever, I suppose on going worry and fretting is about we can do.

Like I said, I think the risk for teenage girls, such as they are, are more social risks: bullying, or going on to meet someone she shouldn't in real life. Kids should be given some grounding in social media at school -- but, of course, Bebo and MySpace are usually firewalled at the school gate.

Just added this to the main post:

The Creative Freedom Foundation website was launched today by a group of artists to advocate a more reasonable view of copyright -- and, in the first instance, to kick off a "Not in My Name" campaign against Section 92 of the copyright amendment bill. The whole site is published under a New Zealand Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike licence. Go look.
