This Education Bill has huge implications and it is crazy not to put it through the scrutiny of a select committee. One result is that is going to make it very hard for parents of children who are school refusers or school phobics. Watch out parents of kids with autism - they will be open to prosecution if their kids can't cope with all the stress of school and refuse to go.

Because it's not like the system is suddenly going to start offering real options to those families. And frankly, it's not that hard to be declared truant in these circumstances.

It's basically outrageous that something like this doesn't go through a select committee.

But you won't find fat by randomly cutting off big lumps, because you're as likely to sever a head as a wobbly bum.

A metaphor so strained that I believe I can hear it creaking ....

I think I heard it screaming, actually.

He sent me the piccies! I've seen them (you have to squint a bit.))

Well, if you're not prepared to squint a bit in pursuit of the real truth, what kind of truth-seeker are you?

This shows a complete, arrogant disregard for the huge number of folks in this country who're on dialup. When you've got 800-ish-thousand dialup connections in a population of 4.2 million, you don't just ignore them!

Some people did a dial-up speed test of all the major local news sites a couple of months ago. From memory, they were all ~1MB. The odd thing is, the TVNZ site could very obviously be smaller if some fairly straightforward things were done..

The guy who's always got this is Sam Morgan. As CEO, he'd reject display advertising that could affect the experience of his dial-up users, who constitute an important chunk of Trade Me's user base, especially in the regions.

  • Hard News: Birth of the Nasty,

Don't bother trying to work out what it all means, just wait for the next clarification - now issued daily.

National's Nicky Wagner spammed me with this just now:

As part of the environment team I have been appointed as a member of the Select Committee to review the Emissions Trading Scheme and related matters. The committee has been set up to have a fresh look at the Emissions Trading Scheme in response to concerns about New Zealand’s poor record on emissions, the changed economic environment and rushed way the legislation was passed. Dealing effectively with climate change is crucial to our environment and to our economy so this work is important and urgent.

No, the committee was set up as a condition of the Act party's support on confidence and supply, Nicky. Your party promised to let the ETS come into operation while it worked on a number of amendments to the legislation.

For some reason, this latest consignment of weasel-wordage has tipped me over the edge.

Submissions on the Celtic pre-Polynesian settlement of NZ will be warmly welcomed.

You fool! Hasn't Muriel Newman already told us it was the Chinese who got here first?

  • Hard News: Birth of the Nasty,

Climate change sceptic Mr Hide said the reference to central projections, risks and uncertainties could allow examination of the science.

And he's right. Rob's also doubtless right too ...

That statement is the kind of gibberish you'd expect from a government on the ropes, not one enjoying its first week in Parliament.

National's transition from successful marketing organisation to actual government looks more awful by the hour.

BTW: when John Key was asked by bFM today why the draft bills to be rushed through aren't available for MPs to read, he said he didn't know and they should ask Gerry Brownlee ...

A technical critique of the new TVNZ site from someone who knows this stuff:

There are a swag of technical things that they appear to have NOT set up correctly that really drag down the load times.

Javascript files not minified, huge CSS files, no compression used when sending content ...

I'd estimate that they are serving 30-40% more traffic than they need to.

The home page is 1.2MB in size. which is about a 10 seconds download on 1 Meg DSL. That and the technical stuff are likely to make page serving times erratic due to unpredictable server loading.

    Yikes.

Sorry to think your Mum got sucked in by these swine Russell, the ads were very persuasive

I should emphasise that she's not greatly in the hole with Hanover, but a lot of her peers are. It's going to make managing retirement villages an unhappy task if a quarter or more of the residents have nest eggs in danger.

If true (a big "if", admittedly) that would be the fourth version of their policy on climate change in as many weeks.

If this is true, then it's pathetic and alarming.

National have been looking composed and competent right up to the point where they actually have to do something, whereupon they've looked like a shambles.
