  • Island Life: Let's be Frank,

The shifts from attackers of the Govt to defenders of the Govt (and vice versa for others) is extraordinary to watch being played out...

Quite. It looks like DPF is going to provide many such entertaining rationalisations in the three years to come.

Meanwhile, John Ansell is going completely nutso about Helen Clark over in the comments at Poneke's blog. Gracious in victory, much? And this is an intelligent, personable, sensible guy, from what I've seen and heard from him.

I've just posted a comment there to that effect. When I met him recently, he was a personable, witty man and good company.

His post on Poneke -- and most especially his claim that Helen Clark "lied about the state of her marriage" -- makes him seem like an angry, unpleasant nutcase.

What is it about Act supporters that makes them incapable of grace?

Gah, if anyone here gets to this level of personal attacks about Key or English, please shoot them, Russell.

I think everyone else would come down on them like a ton of bricks before I had a chance, frankly.

However, my brother insists that Obama is as conservative as all hell and there will be little or no change to the US approach to the world.

Well, he's already making good on his promise to get Gitmo detainees proper trials. That's a bit special.

And why is it that we care about Marilyn Musgrave?

Because I find it both interesting, and cause for cheer that that the American public appears to have turned on the hardline theocons.

Musgrave's record of Christianist culture war and seedy corruption approaches parody.

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Speaking of which, for reasons I can't figure out, I spent five minutes skim-reading his poisnous, ugly and downright rotten Absolute Power at a bookshop one day (as I said, don't ask why). I noticed that the most outlandish of its claims were dutifully footnoted. I then noticed that the footnotes referenced articles he had written in the past.

Oh, if only I could've pulled that stunt during my academic life...it certainly would've made my life a lot easier.

There was a most amusing thread on Poneke where Danyl McLachlan quoted back Wishart's citations from Brian Edwards' bio of Clark -- which, let's say, didn't exactly back up the claims he made ...

    Wishart, naturally, carried on obliviously.

In a way, a leader like Clark has to wear this sort of nuttiness -- it does go with the job. Where I think Wishart marked himself as a nasty little brute was his pursuit of the private citizens he wrote into his lesbian commie conspiracy theory. Any shred of decency pretty much went into the mulcher there.

  • Field Theory: You play to win the game,

Tracey Nelson's game stats are up.

Killer fact -- first three to the breakdown rankings:
    Thomson (19), Messam (19) McCaw (18), Boric (18) and Read (17).

Note that McCaw was only on the field for 20 minutes. Freak.

Oh, this is cool. Check out the picture on the front page of the Labour 08 campaign website.

The Herald is speculating it might be hackers, but I'm sure it's just a little black humour.

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

From the Herald's blogger reaction roundup:

Whale Oil writes that ACT will be looking for the three strikes and you're out law and order policy, cutting government spending and dumping the emissions trading scheme.

"Brilliant and exactly why we needed a stronger ACT in government with National. Rodney should also make sure that Nick Smith is nowhere near anything to do with the environment."

Whale Oil finishes by adding to ACT's list that Roger Douglas be the head of the "Razor gang", establishing an independent anti-corruption commission and a "Commissioner of Unions to ensure open, transparent, accountable trade unions operate in the best interests of their members."

He is actually insane, isn't he?
