  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

    Good grief ...

Initially Mr Key was left hanging as he emerged from his offices for a pre-arranged handshake for media with Mr Hide only to be told he had not arrived yet.

Mr Hide then made Mr Key wait inside the glass doors of the National offices for about two minutes while he spoke to media.

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Much as I like Chris Finlayson, I must admit that I've not watched him that closely. Could be taken entirely the wrong way. :)

I can see how he'd appeal to the bookish type ... and there can't be that many conservative, gay, Catholic, Treaty lawyer aesthetes out there. Could be a catch!

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Does anyone else find it interesting that while all the talk before and immediately after the election was of a National-Act-UF coalition, that's not what's happening?

Rodney will be, Winston-style, a minister outside Cabinet. And Key will be taking his cue from Helen Clark and running a minority government, with confidence and supply from support from Act.

But what I want to know is ... did Act suddenly become radioactive for National after the country saw Douglas, or did Hide get the talk about having to STFU if Act was to be a full coalition partner?

It does seem like something shifted behind the scenes there.

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Does anyone know where the house Key grew up in is?

That would be 19 Hollyford Avenue, Bryndwr.

It's not a bad spot, near the park, swimming pool and one of the best high schools in the country and, as I said above, in an area where public and private housing is well mixed.

Hobsonville could be like that if John Key doesn't wreck it.

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Don't forget, when Key was growing up in a State House, they weren't slums and his family would have got govt. assistance.

They weren't slums at all around Burnside. They were pepper-potted through middle-class suburbs and everyone (mostly) went to the same school.

Which is why I've been so appalled by Key's statements about mixed housing in the Hobsonville development.

  • Field Theory: You play to win the game,

Now to the game. Wayne Barnes blew his whistle a lot, however, for the most part he was correct in his rulings.

I actually thought he was so consumed with the IRB's new "punish players for falling over" edict at the breakdown that he failed to spot a fell of a lot of offsides in the tackle. Still not impressed.

Other thoughts: Adam Thompson -- so fast to the breakdown, so useless once he gets there. But he does seem to be improving a bit. If he can improve his effectiveness in that respect, he'll be a useful player.

Toeava: finally delivering on all that age-grade promise. His positional play at fullback rivals Mils' and he's electrifying on the break. The collission where he hurt his shoulder was the second third where he'd come up to make a crucial tackle that snuffed out a move. Glad he's not crocked after all.

Joe: industrious and aware (ie: things Sivivatu hasn't been lately), but will we ever see him just back his pace again?

In general, I thought the newbies grew in stature as the game wore on. It will have been a useful experience all round.

Thats for a very good reason, they are written before the result is known... I kid you not.

Yeah, I was called by HoS reporters on Friday and asked to offer comment on alternative scenarios for the election result.

I did predict that Helen Clark wouldn't hang around if she didn't win.

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Also being a resident of 'Hi-de-hi' Parnell I was walking with my son up to get the papers from the dairy and it was like a ghost town - I almost expected to see a tumbleweed go by.
A very odd feeling there yesterday morning.

Ponsonby Road was still oddly quiet yesterday afternoon, actually, although I wouldn't venture on a reason.

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

I'm sorry to lose Helen, but it looks like Obama's victory was even more significant than we dared hope...

One group the Obama victory meant everything for is disabled people.

His disabilities policy is historic, not only in what it contains (among other things, it ratifies the UN convention on the rights of the disabled) but in the way it was crafted -- via direct meetings and conference calls with advocacy groups, and active and meaningful discussion forums on the Obama campaign website itself.

For a while there, there was a lot of fine talk about autism (and some not so fine: McCain's claim that Palin knows more than "almost any American that I know" about autism, because she has a baby with Down's Syndrome was just bizarre) but, as is so often the case, it seemed that autists are only ever five years old.

The Obama policy recognises autistic spectrum people -- and everyone else who's different like that -- as people who grow up and live lives. It's special.
